About The Position

Works under general supervision of Manager Language Services Department. As a language Interpreter II, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our Spanish-speaking patients and their families fully understand their care, feel heard, and are empowered to make informed decision about their health. In this role, you will provide accurate, culturally sensitive interpretation between English and Spanish in a variety of clinical and non-clinical settings, supporting physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. You will help bridge language and cultural gaps, ensuring that every patient receives equitable, respectful, and high-quality care. Shift: During training 8am-4:30pm. Training should last from 8-10 weeks. After training the shift is to be determined (TBD). Candidates should be prepared to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends as needed

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree required with four (4) years of job-related experience in a health care setting preferred or
  • 2 years of interpretation experience with use of medical terminology and excellent customer service skills and
  • Must speak, read, and write English and target language fluently.
  • (MINC) MEDICAL INTERPRETER NATL CERT If not completed at the time of hire, the expectation is to achieve the Medical Interpretation National Certification within the first 18 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Must be able to accurately interpret medical and health care information/instructions from physicians, nurses, or other health care staff to patients/families; and accurately interpret questions and/or concerns from patients/families to physicians, nurses, or health care staff.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write both English and a second language.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with patients, families, and hospital staff.
  • Translate consent forms, discharge orders, teaching protocols, and similar from English to target language (s).
  • Assist in obtaining patients/families signature where appropriate.
  • Provide information regarding health care related cultural issues/needs of limited English proficient patients/families to hospital staff to develop sensitivity.
  • Must adhere to the Medical Interpreter Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
  • Must be able to demonstrate patient centered behaviors with a focus on responding quickly to calls for services.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to serve patients, families, clinicians, and physicians.
  • Assist with varying departmental activities and projects as requested.
  • Document in EPIC all daily patient sessions, including University hospitals, hospital based and ambulatory clinics in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Keep an accurate list of interpretation sessions and enter this information by the end of each using the RedCap application in Epic per Language Services Department standards of practice.
  • Ability to meet physical and non-physical demands as outlined in the job description is an essential function of the job. Proactively search for ways to improve service.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Assumes the Team Lead role as needed to support Language Services departmental operations.
