The Lead Engineer- Testing will lead the design, development, and integration of test hardware that enables testing of aviation power equipment in both R&D and production environments. In this role, you will partner closely with product design and manufacturing teams to ensure our products are highly testable, reliable, and ready to transition efficiently from development into manufacturing. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys hands-on mechanical design, test system development, and cross-functional collaboration in a fast-paced aerospace environment. At GE Aerospace in Dayton, OH the EPISCenter is the headquarters for all of Aviation Power Engineering. At this facility you have an opportunity to put your engineering training and skills to use. Our Engineers are focused and challenged on developing new technologies and delivering state of the art products such as Hybrid Electric aircraft, the latest military platforms, and SiC technology to name a few. Plus, if you like hands-on work, there is also a 155,000 sq ft lab that includes 6 high power test cells totaling 15 MW, an EMI chamber, an electronics lab, a rapid build prototype lab, and a real time simulator lab with all the latest equipment. The Advanced Technology Organization is responsible for driving growth through technology by researching customer needs both met and unmet, then finding solutions. Our team supports both military and commercial customers in land, sea, and air domains.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field from an accredited university or college
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in an engineering and/or test engineering role
  • This position requires U.S. citizenship status.
  • Ability and willingness to sit on-site in Dayton, OH

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, Inventor, and/or Siemens NX to create mechanical part designs and 3D models
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working with R&D and manufacturing engineering teams
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience supporting test, automation, and/or test system development to transition products from development to manufacturing
  • Experience with 3D printing in prototyping parts for fitment checks, fixtures, and general test equipment
  • Knowledge of physical sensors, such as, current transducers, pressure transducers, accelerometers, flowmeters, temperature sensors
  • Experience with test equipment, including thermal chambers, oil carts, chillers, data acquisition systems, pressure controllers, DMMs, Oscilloscopes, and other common lab/test instruments
  • Experience designing hydraulic oil systems used in testing aerospace power products
  • Experience with mechanical design of test adapters used in power generation testing, including stub shafts, mounting adapters (AMADs), and vibration fixtures
  • Experience using ANSYS to analyze fixture and test adapter designs
  • Experience designing test fixtures for CCA-level testing
  • Experience automating processes and testing to improve manufacturing yields and reduce production time
  • Experience with testing high voltage, high power electrical systems
  • Strong project management and communication skills, with the ability to coordinate across multi-disciplinary teams

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop test hardware
  • Develop modular, reusable test architectures for manufacturing and engineering design verification.
  • Design test equipment components, fixtures, and adapters using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, Inventor, and/or Siemens NX.
  • Manage and maintain a 3D parts library of COTS components used in test equipment fixtures and adapters.
  • Collaborate across Engineering and Manufacturing
  • Work closely with Product Design Engineers and Manufacturing Engineers to ensure a testable product is developed.
  • Influence product design to increase reliability, test coverage, and manufacturability.
  • Make recommendations for design and process improvements based on test findings and engineering judgment.
  • Plan and execute test hardware projects
  • Define and implement project plans, manage milestones, and conduct design and readiness reviews to ensure reliable test systems are delivered on time.
  • Manage project deliverables to meet schedule, quality, and performance requirements.
  • Own test documentation and analysis
  • Complete the formal release process for test equipment design documents
  • Write Equipment Verification Plans, Equipment Operation Procedures, and Test Reports aligned to product requirements.
  • Investigate test failures, perform root-cause analysis, and communicate and execute corrective actions with stakeholders.
  • Support test operations and automation
  • Work with test equipment including thermal chambers, oil carts, chillers, data acquisition systems, pressure controllers, DMMs, oscilloscopes, and related lab equipment.
  • Apply knowledge of physical sensors (voltage, current, pressure, acceleration, flow, temperature) in fixture and test setup design.
  • Support and/or lead efforts to automate processes and testing to improve manufacturing yields and reduce production time.
  • Support the transition of products from development to manufacturing through robust test solutions.
