About The Position

In support of the Student Affairs Learning Outcomes, the Wellness and Recreation team manages multiple fitness and recreation facilities and coordinates a variety of on- and off-campus recreation and wellness education programming. Alongside professional staff and in collaboration with other team members, the Lead Fitness Center Assistant is responsible for providing excellent customer service to all fitness center guests and assisting with day-to-day facility operations, programs, and services. The Lead Fitness Center Assistant strives to create welcoming environments that contribute to the University by building community, increasing the students’ pride in Chapman University, and improving students’ healthy sense of self. All Lead Fitness Center Assistants are employees in the Department of Student Engagement and the Division of Student Affairs.

  • Because of the student-facing nature of this role, remote work is not permitted.
  • Student employees are encouraged to use sick pay when it is needed and available.
  • CPR /First Aid/ AED certification through the end of the academic year (provided by the Department of Student Engagement)

Responsibilities

  • Assist professional staff and graduate assistant with onboarding, training, supervision, and evaluation of Fitness Center Assistants, Fitness Session Leaders, and Fitness Education Instructors.
  • Assist professional staff and graduate assistant with enforcement of staff expectations and facility policies and procedures.
  • Assist professional staff and graduate assistant with internal team building, development, and recognition opportunities.
  • Work designated opening shifts from 5:45am-9am and designated closing shifts from 6pm-9pm to ensure facility coverage during major shift changes.
  • Coordinate all aspects of the GroupX fitness program, including training/scheduling GroupX Fitness Session Leaders, ensuring GroupX classes are accurately described and organized in the class registration/management system, and promoting GroupX classes.
  • Coordinate scheduling of fitness center staff, enforce availability expectations, and maintain accurate records to document employee attendance and compliance with expectations and policies.
  • Run weekly task log and headcount completion reports to identify and report gaps and areas of needed improvement.
  • Model exemplary work pertaining to each of the categories below, providing a standard for others to follow.
  • Proactively greet guests as they approach reception desks.
  • Ensure each guest is authorized to use a fitness center and has completed the appropriate Chapman University waiver prior to each visit.
  • Provide excellent service to guests in all Wellness and Recreation facilities.
  • Provide accurate information regarding Chapman University and Wellness and Recreation facilities.
  • Gather and confirm information to provide guests with a full and complete response to their need(s).
  • Wear required name badge and present: a positive image of Chapman University employees, specifically the Wellness and Recreation team. an image of an individual who understands themselves to be responsible for tracking the safety of the building environment, serving faculty/staff/student guests, cultivating a welcoming and engaging environment, and maintaining facility tidiness.
  • Maintain a clean and professional desk environment, minimizing clutter and prioritizing organization.
  • Limit desk presence to other Wellness and Recreation employees (non-employees aren’t permitted behind desks).
  • Assist guests in checking out sports and recreation gear.
  • Prepare facility for daily opening/closing by following established procedures.
  • Complete hourly active laps of fitness center and outdoor recreation facilities to identify, respond to, and report concerns pertaining to safety, cleanliness, maintenance/repair, and functionality of provided equipment and ensure the facility presents a welcoming environment.
  • Maintain regular attention on fitness center guests and their use of equipment.
  • Perform routine cleaning of high-touch surfaces and collect/dispose of trash during each shift to ensure regular attention to cleanliness.
  • Organize and return furniture and equipment to its designated/intended location.
  • Ensure music programming is limited to non-explicit and licensed content.
  • Assist in collecting, laundering, and distributing towels across both Orange campus fitness centers.
  • Communicate and enforce Wellness and Recreation Facility Policy clearly and report related concerns promptly.
  • Assist in other ways with all of the above as determined by supervisor.
  • Understand established campus and facility emergency response procedures.
  • Follow emergency response procedures when responding to emergencies, including notifying professional staff immediately.
  • Document all accidents, incidents, and emergencies resulting in personal injury, facility damage, or theft by completing an Accident/Incident Report.
  • Offer, but do not administer, basic first aid supplies as needed.
  • Promote fitness centers along with other Wellness and Recreation facilities, programs, and services.
  • Promote the use of Wellness and Recreation virtual engagement platforms (e.g. RecPortal, CU Health and Wellness website, Panther Connect, Instagram, etc.)
  • Attend all scheduled Wellness & Recreation staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Serve as a representative for the Wellness and Recreation team at events as determined by supervisor.
  • Participate in and contribute to Department of Student Engagement programs, services, experiences, and resources as determined by supervisor.
