About The Position

The Lead Hardware Engineer is responsible for managing requirements and developing mechanical and electrical design solutions for SureScan’s inline baggage screening products. This hands-on role involves documenting requirements and interface definitions using industry best practices while ensuring that all design documentation, CAD models, and analyses are properly developed and reviewed to mitigate costly redesign risks. The Lead Hardware Engineer will define verification and validation test procedures, support system-level integration and testing, and contribute to the full engineering development cycle. This position combines technical expertise with leadership potential and serves as a stepping stone toward senior engineering management opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
  • 5-10 years of experience in hardware design engineering within aerospace, medical, or other high-technology industries
  • Strong foundation in both electrical and mechanical engineering design principles
  • Working knowledge of X-ray physics and related design considerations
  • Hands-on experience with CAD applications for mechanical and/or electrical design
  • Familiarity with Configuration Management and Design Control applications
  • Experience developing hardware design and test applications (firmware, LabVIEW, C++, or related platforms)
  • Ability to generate detailed design documentation and technical reports
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize with minimal direction
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an U.S. Government Secret security clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with industry standards for machine design and safety for X-ray generating products
  • Familiarity with third-party regulatory testing and product approvals (medical, aerospace, or security applications)
  • Experience with industrial automation systems, conveyors, and PLC-based controls

Responsibilities

  • Analyze current hardware and system operations to identify baseline performance and improvement opportunities
  • Perform hardware design and development activities for new and upgraded system features and capabilities
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to identify and implement cost reduction and process improvement opportunities
  • Ensure all hardware design requirements are properly documented in functional specifications and interface definition documents
  • Coordinate with Program Management and other engineering departments to ensure successful completion of hardware deliverables
  • Monitor quality of hardware outputs and ensure project objectives are met within schedule and budget
  • Anticipate potential problems and resolve or escalate as appropriate
  • Provide estimates and track project effort to meet cost and schedule goals
  • Travel between SureScan business locations (Binghamton, NY and Boxborough, MA) approximately 3-5 times per year and other customer/test sites 2-3 times per year, typically for periods up to 14 days per trip
