About The Position

LEAD LIFEGUARD The Astoria Parks & Recreation Department is currently looking to hire Lead Lifeguards to set the standard for safety and service and lead by example in and out of the water. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Champion water safety by consistently upholding facility rules with professionalism and a positive approach Maintain constant vigilance over patrons and activities Act quickly and effectively to prevent and respond to provide first aid and emergency care when needed Create a welcoming environment for all guests Contribute to daily facility operations by helping maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment for all patrons. SCHEDULE Lead Lifeguards work part-time and are scheduled based on their availability and the staffing needs of the facility, including regular operating hours as well as special events. We are looking for Leads available to work 3-4 days per week, with preference given to those who can commit to a minimum of 25 hours weekly and are available mornings, afternoons and weekends. Most desirable candidates will be available for 25-30 hours per week. Part-time positions with the City are limited to working no more than 129 hours per month. Shift Schedule Tuesdays - Fridays Mornings: 6:00AM - 11:00AM Afternoons: 11:00AM - 4:00PM Evenings: 2:30PM - 7:00PM Saturdays Mornings: 7:30AM - 12:00PM Afternoons: 11:45AM - 5:00PM HIRING PROCESS Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. Selected candidates will be invited to participate in an interview and swim test, with additional details provided in the interview invitation. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Ensures the safety of patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies by leading Aquatic Center part-time staff members. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatic Center Manager and in coordination with Head Lifeguards. Maintains constant surveillance of the patrons in the facility through proactive scanning patterns. Acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of an emergency while providing coach or direction to Aquatic Center staff to ensure Emergency Action Plans are followed. Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services while providing coach and direction to Aquatic Center staff to ensure the Emergency Action Plans are followed. Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service. Consistently enforces facility rules in a proactive, firm and positive manner. Completes required monthly training. Communicates any safety or staffing concern to Aquatic Center Manager or Head Lifeguards. Leads by example, demonstrating proper rescue skills. Proactively provides coaching to address unsafe or incorrect behaviors and techniques in a constructive manner. Assists Aquatic Center Manger and Head Lifeguards in performing Vigilance Awareness Training exercises. Communicates with Aquatic Center staff to ensure that all cleaning and facility tasks are completed for each shift. Performs chemical checks to ensure water chemistry is within safe ranges during regular checks throughout shift. Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation. Displays excellent communication skills required in working with coworkers/public, including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure. Proactively performs, leads and directs facility cleaning. Including but not limited to; sweeping, mopping and sanitizing floors, wiping down and sanitizing surfaces, taking out the garbage, picking up debris, cleaning restrooms, laundering towels and lost and found items, etc. Demonstrates understanding of, adheres to, and trains others on the correct techniques of, all safety regulations and practices. Possesses advanced knowledge of facility's emergency action plan and understands the role their position facilitates in an emergency. Respectfully takes direction from the supervisor. Follows policies, procedures, and guidelines as described in the City of Astoria Personnel Manual and other documentation related to this position.

Requirements

  • Must be 16 years or older.
  • Must be available to work at least three days per week.
  • Possession of or ability to pass an Ellis and Associates International Lifeguard Training Certification, including CPR & First Aid certification.
  • Ability to physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
  • Ability to pass a City background check including checks of Criminal, Social Security Trace and Sex Offender Registry records.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience lifeguarding or working in water-safety settings.
  • Experience working with children and young adults.
  • Competitive swimming experience.
  • Current or expired Lifeguard Certification from nationally recognized agency (Ellis & Assoc., Red Cross).
