About The Position

This position will be responsible for providing tooling design support to customer-funded programs and internal research efforts within our Space Superiority & Imaging Division (SSI) and Space & Mission Systems Division (SMS). Our engineering solutions serve a broad array of government, civil and commercial customers by enhancing information superiority, contributing to our national security and providing actionable data for the protection of property and human life. We specialize in high-reliability airborne and space-based remote sensing payloads that offer active and motion imaging and data processing, exploitation and dissemination. We also provide solutions that map and monitor the earth for a variety of commercial and governmental users. Mechanical Engineer to perform design, development, analysis, and manufacturing tasks on complex tooling and fixturing for opto-mechanical assemblies. Program support and technical leadership over requirements definition, concept generation, material and finish selection, trade studies, design sensitivity/optimization studies, preliminary and detailed design, design sensitivity and tolerance analysis, design documentation, Bill of Materials (BOM) management, and assembly/integration and testing. Candidate must have strong proficiency in 3D modeling, design for manufacturing, and ability to work independently or within a multi-disciplined team environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with a minimum of 9 years of prior design engineering experience. A graduate degree with a minimum of 7 years of prior design engineering experience, or in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 13 years of prior design engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in design of tooling, ground support equipment, or special test equipment.
  • Professional experience in CAD modelling

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the space defense industry highly desired
  • Knowledge of space industry and military standard drafting standards and practices, specifically ASME Y14.5-2009 and ASME Y14.100
  • Fabrication experience is preferred.
  • Prior or current experience with tooling design for spaceflight applications, especially related to optical systems

Responsibilities

  • Provides tool engineering and tool design process direction and leadership to the tooling team to support production and new programs for spaceflight applications.
  • Conducting design reviews with cross functional teams to obtain approval of tool designs.
  • Oversee procurement/fabrication of tooling.
  • Apply GD&T and complex system tolerance analysis.
  • Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/DFMA) experience
  • Develops CAD Model concepts using CREO, 3D modeling and detailed 2D drawings.
  • Responsible for design completeness through fabrication, including tool and process tryout.
  • Directs or supports design, fabrication, modifications and repair of special tools in support of manufacturing operations and processes of opto-mechanical systems
  • Provides technical support to product engineering for producibility through manufacturing, test and field use.
  • Assists in tool acceptance criteria for in-house fabrication or outside procurement of special tools.
