About The Position

Overview Lead Physicist, FT, Piedmont Columbus John B. Amos Cancer Center Provides physics services related to the planning and delivery of therapeutic radiation treatment in accordance with the Radiation Oncologist's prescription. Provides technical leadership including clinical set-up expertise to radiation oncologists, dosimetrists and therapists. Performs quality assurance checks according to regulatory requirements and industry standards for all department equipment. Serves as a mentor and team lead for staff medical physicists. Reports to the Manager for Radiation Physics.

Requirements

  • Masters of Science in Medical Physics, or related discipline.
  • Five years of clinical experience as a medical physicist in a radiation therapy department.
  • Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiation Physics
  • Ability to be listed as an authorized user on the State of Georgia Radioactive Material Licenses
  • Participation in the American Board of Radiology Maintenance of Certification Program

Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with radiation oncologists, medical dosimetrists, and radiation therapists to provide technical expertise for treatment programs in radiation oncology including, but not limited to, external beam, brachytherapy, radiosurgery, and radiopharmaceutical programs.
  • Performs quality assurance checks based on industry standards on all equipment including, but not limited to, linear accelerators; CT scanners; treatment planning systems; and brachytherapy sources and equipment per AAPM recommendations and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains documentation of all commissioning, acceptance, and quality assurance activities and provides these documents for review.
  • Maintains a high level of expertise in the use of the treatment planning and treatment delivery hardware and software and performs routine quality assurance checks and peer reviews of treatment plan quality.
  • Performs physics chart checks during the course of care for patients under treatment; makes recommendations for policy and procedure updates; provides oversight for the technical aspects of the treatment delivery process.
  • Provides staff in-services; radiation safety education; participates in the instruction of medical physics residents, dosimetry students, and radiation therapy students rotating through the clinic.
  • Participates as an active member of medical physics and radiation oncology initiatives; attends scheduled staff meetings; contributes positively to the growth of programs and services.
