Summary As the Lead Project Sustaining Engineer, you will oversee comprehensive product development and testing activities while driving continuous improvements in both design and product quality. In this role, you will serve as the primary sustaining engineering lead for assigned water-cooled chiller platforms, where you will be responsible for planning and executing key sustaining and improvement initiatives across various product families. Your daily impact involves collaborating closely with factory, quality, field service, and supply chain teams to resolve emerging sustaining issues and enhance overall product robustness. The Lead Project Sustaining Engineer will act as a technical pillar for the department, mentoring fellow engineers and technicians by providing high-level technical leadership, systems thinking, and best-practice guidance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 7+ years of engineering experience in product development, sustaining engineering, or Engineered to Order (“ETO”) environments.
  • OR A Master’s degree with 5+ years of experience in product development, sustaining engineering, or Engineered to Order (“ETO”) environments.
  • 2+ years of experience supporting system‑level testing, laboratory environments, or complex mechanical systems.
  • 1+ year of experience leading cross‑functional technical initiatives.
  • Able and willing to travel internationally about 4 to 5 times per year (Mexico).

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in mechanical engineering, or industrial engineering, or electrical engineering.
  • Substantial knowledge of Carrier organization, programs, or systems to make enhancements within job area.
  • Working knowledge of the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code and experience performing code‑based calculations.
  • HVAC industry experience.
  • Experience in productivity measurement and dashboarding.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cross‑functional technical projects that improve product standardization, reduce ETO complexity, and enhance lifecycle support.
  • Own technical decision‑making for sustaining changes, ensuring alignment with product strategy, manufacturing capability, and service impact.
  • Own ECR/ECN technical reviews, engineering data releases, and configuration alignment to transition repeat ETO content into standardized or simplified solutions.
  • Coordinate with Design Services, ECAT/VC teams, factory stakeholders, and product engineering to ensure accurate and timely engineering releases.
  • Manage lifecycle impacts of sustaining changes, including risk assessment, documentation updates, and downstream effects to manufacturing and service.
  • Perform and review ASME pressure vessel and system‑level calculations in support of sustaining changes, design updates, and code-driven modifications.
  • Support ASME‑related ECNs, certified drawing updates, and coordination with Authorized Inspectors.
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight on ASME compliance for ongoing production and sustaining issues.
  • Manage product development activities including engineering studies, feasibility studies, cost estimates, implementation of standard and non-standard specifications, drawing board layout and interpretation, and development of performance or maintenance requirements.
  • Execute test and qualification for systems, sub-systems, and components.
  • Review test results in relation to design or rated specifications and test objectives and recommend modification or adjustments of equipment to meet specifications.
  • Ensure commonality and optimization of product & components to drive improvement in design quality through the reduction in design errors and escapes.
  • Test models of alternate designs and processing methods to assess feasibility, operating condition effects, possible new applications, and necessity of modification.
  • Review parts, specifications, designs, or sketches for machines, components, systems, or work orders / purchase requests.
  • Communicate and cooperate with quality clinic and related departments to ensure product quality and support the test and verification of field issues.
  • May provide technical support as an internal consultant in the trial-manufacture of new products, components, or equipment, follow up and resolve mechanical/electrical issues.
