Packanack Animal Hospital is seeking an experienced Lead Veterinary Technician to join our team! As a Lead GP Technician in our busy, four‑doctor practice, you'll play a central role in delivering seamless, empathetic care. You’ll support wellness and sick visits, assist with general surgeries and dental procedures, manage in‑house lab diagnostics and radiology, and ensure smooth in‑house pharmacy and inventory operations.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of veterinary technician experience
  • 1-3+ years of Lead-level experience managing shifts and supervising clinical teams
  • Veterinary Technician License or Certification is strongly preferred
  • Surgical experience
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Good time management and efficiency with ability to prioritize
  • Resourceful problem-solving skills with active recall

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for surgery, monitor anesthesia, and oversee post operative recovery
  • Perform canine and feline intubation
  • Place intravenous catheters (accessory, cephalic, medial and lateral saphenous) in canines and felines
  • Administer intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous injections
  • Collect blood samples from jugular, cephalic, and saphenous veins
  • Obtain digital radiographs and submit radiology consults (STAT, routine, and AI)
  • Capture dental radiographs and perform dental procedures using hand scaling or ultrasonic scalers
  • Collect urine via expression, cystocentesis, or catheterization
  • Process in house and send out laboratory samples (IDEXX and Antech)
  • Assist veterinarians with vaccines, wound care, and minor procedures
  • Record patient histories and vitals accurately in the medical record
  • Perform bathing, ear cleaning, nail trims, anal gland expression, and medical grooming
  • Educate clients on treatment plans, medications, and follow up care
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients to support patient outcomes and client satisfaction
  • Supervise, train, and mentor veterinary technicians and assistants
  • Develop and enforce hospital protocols, SOPs, and safety standards
  • Coordinate onboarding, performance evaluations, ongoing training, and corrective actions
  • Create structured training plans with measurable skill progression
  • Implement checklists to improve efficiency, reduce errors, and enhance team performance
  • Manage clinical operations including staff scheduling, workflow optimization, and coverage planning
  • Maintain equipment maintenance schedules
  • Oversee controlled drug logs and cycle counts
  • Manage inventory and update the Practice Information Management System
  • Assist with pricing markups and cost control initiatives
  • Maintain continuing education through conferences, webinars, Penn Foster coursework, and professional literature
