About The Position

WSP is currently seeking a Lead Water Resources Engineer to join our Mid-Atlantic Water team. This position will be based out of our Baltimore, MD office, with flexibility for hybrid, remote, or in-office work arrangements. Candidates within the broader Mid-Atlantic region will also be considered. We are seeking an engineer with a strong foundation in project management, hydrology, hydraulics, stormwater management, drainage, and erosion & sediment control, and who is enthusiastic about contributing to significant transportation and water infrastructure, flood resilience, and watershed projects across the region. We are seeking a candidate with at least 7-10 years of relevant experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, with a focus in Water Resources or closely related discipline.
  • At least 7 to 10 years of relevant post-education experience.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the state of Maryland, or ability to become licensed in MD within 6 months.
  • Proficient knowledge of water resource engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to environmental permitting and project work-related issues.
  • Knowledge of stormwater management (SWM), drainage, erosion and sediment control (ESC/E&SC), watershed delineation and planning/studies, floodplain delineation, etc.
  • Proficient ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
  • Well-developed ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Familiarity with hydrology & hydraulics (H&H) and surface water design and analysis, hydrologic methodologies/models (TR-20/TR-55, HEC-HMS, SWMM, HydroCAD, etc.), hydraulic models (HEC-RAS, HEC-RAS-2D, HEC-GeoRAS, HydroCAD, OpenFlows, etc.).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and associated digital infrastructure.
  • Experience with CADD software such as Bentley OpenRoads (ORD) and/or MicroStation, and Autodesk’s AutoCAD/Civil 3D.
  • Basic experience with GIS software (ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, GRASS).
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills. Communication is a top-level priority.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with 3D modeling of terrains/surfaces, storm drain infrastructure, etc. in CADD software.
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu.
  • Advanced analysis or custom script/programming experience with GIS software.
  • Knowledge of Maryland/Virginia/DC regulatory frameworks.
  • Construction-phase support and/or construction management experience for water resource projects. Direct construction experience is also of value.

Responsibilities

  • Perform stormwater management (SWM), drainage, and erosion & sediment control (E&SC) design.
  • Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) analyses for stormwater management permitting, drainage, culverts, roadway systems, and flood evaluations.
  • Prepare plans, calculations, data tables, figures, charts, technical memoranda, and permitting documentation to clearly communicate pertinent information.
  • Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams to execute mid-level projects including budgets, tracking hours and expenses, task completion, and permit applications.
  • Coordinate, review, and approve infrastructure design plans, ensuring data integrity and work is compliant with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and support QA/QC.
  • Mentor junior engineers and lead task management.
  • Lead or support field activities, including BMP inspections, watershed delineations, and drainage assessments, if physically capable.
  • Assist with project scoping, estimating, and coordination with agencies/clients.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
  • Collaborate with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future ready solutions for clients.
  • Remain current in latest water resources engineering techniques and regulations.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
