About The Position

Lorain County Public Health is seeking a seasonal, contract-based League Cycling Instructor (LCI) to support Safe Routes to School and community bicycle safety programming across Lorain County. This position is intended for individuals interested in delivering youth- and family-focused bicycle safety education in school and community settings. Instruction will include classroom-based learning and on-bike skill development that promotes safe cycling practices, traffic awareness, and confidence in bicycle use. Programming supports community health initiatives, grant-funded objectives, and Safe Routes to School activities. This is a seasonal, as-needed contract position. Work schedules will vary based on program demand and may include sessions during school hours, summer programming periods, or community events. Occasional early morning, evening, or weekend instruction may be required, and scheduling will be coordinated with program supervisors and community partners. Active certification as a League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor (LCI) is preferred but not required. This position is a contract role and does not include employment status or benefits. FUNCTION Under the general guidance of the Safe Routes to School Coordinator(s) and Population Health Supervisor, this seasonal contract position is responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating bicycle safety education programs for youth and families. The role supports grant-funded Safe Routes to School programming by promoting safe cycling behaviors, traffic safety awareness, and skill development. Programming will be coordinated with Population Health staff and community partners to ensure alignment with project work plans and community health objectives. This position is seasonal, as-needed, and not considered employment with Lorain County Public Health and does not include benefits.

Requirements

  • Experience working with youth in educational or recreational settings.
  • Strong knowledge of bicycle safety, traffic rules, and basic bike mechanics.
  • Ability to ride a bicycle comfortably in various environments.
  • Successful BCI background check required upon hire.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
  • Willingness to become certified in League of American Bicyclists Instruction

Nice To Haves

  • Active League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor (LCI) certification.
  • Familiarity with Safe Routes to School programs or other community bike safety initiatives.
  • Experience designing and leading youth-focused bike programs.
  • Experience working in school-based or grant-funded programs.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement bike safety instruction in formats appropriate for schools and community programs, including summer bike camps, after-school clubs, classroom lessons, and other SRTS initiatives.
  • Draft and submit simple, culturally and age-appropriate lesson plans, activity outlines, and educational materials to LCPH for review.
  • Lead both classroom-style instruction and on-bike skill-building activities.
  • Administer pre- and post-program surveys to participants and/or caregivers to evaluate knowledge and skill improvement and assist with data collection required for grant reporting.
  • Create and distribute post-program resource packets, including bike safety tips, local cycling resources, and community riding opportunities.
  • Present valid liability insurance coverage, either through League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor (LCI) certification or approved alternative insurance.
  • Recruit, coordinate, and supervise volunteers or assistant instructors; ensure substitutes are approved by LCPH.
  • Verify completion of background checks for all co-instructors, volunteers, and substitutes prior to program participation.
  • Complete accurate and timely submission of attendance logs, participant data, survey results, photos (with signed media releases), equipment inventories, and summary reports for all activities in accordance with grant requirements.
  • Participate in scheduled planning meetings, team meetings during active programming periods, and grant-related check-ins with the SRTS Coordinator and Population Health team to review progress, address barriers, and ensure alignment with work plans.
  • Attend required technical assistance calls, webinars, professional development training, and League of American Bicyclists training (if applicable).
  • Assist with setup, breakdown, safe transport, and basic maintenance checks of bicycles, helmets, and instructional materials.
  • Complete evaluations and summary reports of all activities, including attendance logs, survey results, photos (with signed releases), and informal assessments.
  • Participate in professional development, including completion of League Certified Instructor (LCI) training if not already certified.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support SRTS and community cycling initiatives.
