About The Position

The Legislative Assistant will foster the initiatives of the GAPP Group. Assist members of the group in monitoring and analyzing legislative, regulatory, and political developments for a variety of clients. Day-to-day tasks include researching public policy issues, covering congressional hearings, writing memos, arranging and coordinating meetings on the Hill, and attending meetings on the Hill.

Requirements

  • Four-year college degree
  • 1 - 3 years of related legislative or public policy experience (congressional or agency experience preferred)
  • Proven organizational and time management skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Well-versed on the federal legislative and regulatory processes
  • Strong and clear writing skills and the ability to understand and synthesize complex legislative and regulatory issues
  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact positively with the wide variety of personalities encountered in governmental and political environments
  • Ability to exercise independence and discretion in decision-making
  • Must be able to handle sensitive matters and maintain confidentiality
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and work under pressure

Responsibilities

  • Draft cogent analyses of legislative, regulatory, and political developments
  • Assist with the development and implementation of advocacy strategies
  • Represent Steptoe and its clients at external meetings and events with minimal supervision or oversight
  • Develop and foster relationships with policymakers and staff
  • Correspond with clients and relevant parties
  • Assist members of the GAPP group in monitoring and analyzing legislative, regulatory, and political developments for a wide variety of clients
  • Produce legislative schedules and tracking materials, alerting other GAPP professionals about relevant committee meetings, floor activity, or legislative status updates
  • Conduct policy research and prepare memos on key client issues
  • Coordinate and attend meetings with congressional and agency officials and staff
  • Complete other duties as assigned
