About The Position

The candidate for this position will provide support to the transportation department with specialized maintenance and repair to buses/automobiles. They will assist the Shop Foreman with daily, routine maintenance of bus/automobile re pairs, preventive and safety checks, fuel and cleaning of vehicles, care of materials and inventory of supplies, and other maintenance duties as assigned. Direct Accountability and Report: The candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Transportation Supervisor and/or Shop Foreman, who is responsible for the overall upkeep of all county vehicles for the safe transport of students, faculty, and staff. An annual classified evaluation will be based upon the job description, district and personal goals and objectives specific to the school or the position, and the performance of the licensed bus/auto mechanic.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Minimum of three 3-5 years working as a Skilled Mechanic or Technician experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge exhibited in performing bus/automobile testing.
  • Knowledge of safety practices within the shop setting.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Some computer level of computer skills to operate software relevant to bus/auto testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Specialized Licensure and Certifications (preferred) in multiple areas: CDL within 90 days of hire, Preventive Maintenance, State Inspection License, DOT Brake Certification, A/C, and Diesel
  • Some welding experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general service technician duties daily for preventive maintenance and upkeep of bus operations: service and grease; fuel and cleaning; oil and filter changes; remove/replace bulbs, belts, lights, batteries, etc.
  • Responsible for ensuring safety and general maintenance inspections are done on a routine schedule.
  • Responsible for monitoring and evaluating vehicles checked for foreseeable repairs and service.
  • Follow a weekly maintenance schedule assigned by the Shop Foreman and communicate issues that may arise.
  • Responsible for performing an initial evaluation of work assignments and problematic systems requiring specific parts and service repair in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for the following maintenance procedures and maintaining any required records and/or documentation of service and repairs.
  • Responsible for conducting school bus/automobile test to check: Body systems and special equipment; Diesel engines; DriveTrains; Suspension and steering; Electrical/electronic systems; Engine Repair & Performance; Automatic Transmission; Manual DriveTrain and Axles;
  • Responsible for maintaining equipment, inventory of materials, and avoiding excess and/or waste.
  • Responsible for collaborative communication with Shop Foreman and the team of mechanics.
  • Comply with all safety regulations and practices on site and across the division.
  • Conduct follow-ups on all maintenance and repair work completed.
  • Establish strategies to meet workload demands on time.
  • Works to promote students, staff, and faculty well-being and success with reliable and well-maintained transportation.
  • Adheres to federal and state laws, school and division policies, and ethical guidelines.
  • Sets goals for improvement of knowledge and skills to advance level of performance.
  • Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with administration, staff, other school personnel and community.
