About The Position

The Lifeguard position at the City of Tucson’s Parks and Recreation department keeps swimmers safe by watching the pool, preventing accidents and enforcing safety rules. They are trained to respond to emergencies, perform rescues, and provide first aid while maintaining a clean, hazard-free environment for enjoyable swimming. This position reports to a Pools Supervisor. This position does not supervise.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 15 years of age at the time of application.
  • Applicants must have successfully completed the Starguard Training, In-Water Skills test, and Written Exam on lifeguard skills and safety.
  • The following certifications must be obtained within one (1) month of hire and must be maintained throughout employment in this position: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification First Aid Certification

Responsibilities

  • Monitors patrons in the pool and surrounding areas to ensure safety.
  • Enforces facility rules, regulations, and policies to prevent accidents.
  • Performs rescues and administers first aid or CPR as required.
  • Inspects the pool, equipment, and safety supplies.
  • Reports any hazards or unsafe conditions.
  • Provides customer service by assisting pool patrons with inquiries and provides guidance on swimming safety.
  • Participates in regular training sessions and emergency response drills.
  • Monitors water quality by checking pool chemicals such as chlorine and pH levels to ensure they meet safety standards.
  • Ensures the pool deck, restrooms, and other areas are clean and organized.
  • Opens and closes the pool each day according to scheduled hours.
  • Documents any incidents and/or injuries.
