About The Position

Established in 1963, and situated in the Santa Cruz Mountains on 180 acres of old-growth redwood forest, Roaring Camp Inc. is a heritage tourist railroad that offers two unique journeys. The Bear Mountain excursion offers year around steam train excursions through the old growth redwood forest, while the Santa Cruz Beach Train offers seasonal excursions through the Redwood Forests to the sandy beaches of Santa Cruz. The seasonal Locomotive Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of locomotives on our passenger service Santa Cruz Beach Train during peak operational periods. This role ensures compliance with all operating rules, safety regulations, and company policies while delivering a high-quality experience for customers and supporting overall rail operations.

Requirements

  • Prior locomotive engineer experience preferred; training may be provided for qualified candidates.
  • Knowledge of railroad operating rules and safety practices.
  • Valid locomotive engineer certification.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Ability to work irregular schedules, including weekends, holidays, and extended hours.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb ladders and steps on locomotives and railcars.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Good vision, hearing, and situational awareness.
  • Position is temporary and tied to peak season operations.
  • Flexible availability is required based on operational demand.
  • Opportunity for rehire in future seasons based on performance and business needs.
  • Outdoor and rail yard environments with exposure to weather, noise, and moving equipment.
  • Safety-sensitive position requiring strict adherence to all protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Operate locomotives in a safe, efficient, and rule-compliant manner.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of locomotives and equipment.
  • Monitor gauges, controls, and systems to ensure proper operation during service.
  • Adhere to all federal, state, and company safety regulations and operating procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with conductors, dispatchers, and other crew members.
  • Respond to changing track, weather, and operational conditions with sound judgment.
  • Report mechanical issues, delays, or incidents promptly and accurately.
  • Assist with basic servicing of locomotives, including fueling, watering, and cleaning as needed.
  • Provide a positive and professional experience when interacting with passengers (if applicable).
