About The Position

Rotates among the following assignments as scheduled. Performs data entry functions which includes specimen receiving, accessioning, and work list review. Performs secretarial services to the Pathology Department including, but not limited to: registering requisitions, computer operations, answering telephones and properly routing messages, typing reports, scanning, monitors and responds to inquiries, operation of label devices, while demonstrating positive customer service. Retrieves specimens from OR and main laboratory, verifying patient information and specimen accuracy at time of retrieval. Ensures locations are adequately stocked with processing and collection materials and reagents. Accessions specimens and frozen section specimens received in Pathology; processes Cytology, verify specimen information for accuracy, acceptability, and special handling requirements. Tracks all materials sent for consultations and second opinions to outside hospitals or facilities. Prepares and assembles slides for tumor board conferences, QA reports, medical/legal inquires, and returns them for permanent storage post conference/review. Prepares specimens for shipment to Falmouth Hospital, reference labs, and other institutions by collecting and assembling necessary materials for transportation of specimens and associated paperwork. Processes reference lab cases and maintains logs. Files, scans, and updates information for Pathology and Cytology cases. Maintains work benches, specimen refrigerators, and other work areas within the department to include, but not limited to, stain lines, filling formalin containers, cryostat maintenance, temperature checks, supplies, daily QC, etc. Maintains slide and block filing. Return mail tasks, which include but not limited to: unpacking slides and/or blocks, scanning reports, and filing back the slides and/or blocks. Consistently provides service excellence to all donors, patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers. Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English
  • Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must meet at least one of the following qualifications:
  • One or more years of experience in roles involving lab test ordering, phlebotomy, or clinical/administrative lab support
  • Associates degree (or higher) in a heath science-related field
  • Proficient in computer systems and laboratory information programs, with the ability to manage data entry and electronic workflows efficiently
  • Successful passage of Medical Terminology course OR successful passage of the CCH Medical Terminology exam.
  • Successful passage of Dangerous Goods within 30 days of starting the position.
  • CCHC Typing Test – 30 WPM
  • Strong multitasking and interpersonal skills

Nice To Haves

  • (Preferred) – Experience with LIS (EPIC)
