About The Position

This position is responsible for performing a variety of machining tasks to ensure that all projects are completed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with GEM Equipment’s quality standards. The Machinist 1 operates both CNC and manual machines under supervision, loading, managing, and saving CNC programs while adjusting machine offsets to maintain precise part tolerances. This role includes changing and setting up tooling, monitoring and replenishing machine fluids, and maintaining personal precision tools. The Machinist 1 is responsible for preparing and completing all required project paperwork, including requisition slips for materials not specified in job orders, to maintain accurate inventory records. Efficient loading and unloading of parts, operation of a forklift, and assistance in training new employees are also required. Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment is essential, including adhering to all PPE requirements such as steel-toed boots and safety glasses. This position demands attention-to-detail, mechanical aptitude, adherence to safety standards, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment while supporting the overall productivity and quality goals of the shop. All job levels come with an incentive of an additional $1 an hour bonus pay for any worker that proves that they can efficiently run Mastercam or otherwise completely program CNC machine.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED equivalent.
  • 1+ years of experience working in a machinist role or related field (CNC or manual machining experience).
  • Familiarity with operating lathes, mills, and possibly CNC machines under supervision.
  • Able to read drawings/blueprints and use common measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges).
  • Can set up machines for simple jobs and operate them safely.
  • Basic understanding of cutting tools, tool changes, and machine maintenance needs.
  • Experience loading/unloading materials and parts.
  • Understanding of general shop safety practices and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to complete basic work orders, job sheets, or material requisition.
  • Proficiency in operating CNC and manual machining equipment.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Basic knowledge of CNC programming, loading, saving, and managing programs.
  • Skill in adjusting machine offsets to maintain precise part tolerances.
  • Experience with tooling setup, changes, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of proper use and maintenance of machine fluids and lubricants.
  • Strong organizational skills for completing paperwork, inventory requisitions, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Ability to safely operate a forklift and handle materials efficiently.
  • Competence in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work area.
  • Familiarity with personal precision tools and ability to maintain them properly.
  • Adherence to safety protocols and proper use of required PPE (steel-toed boots, safety glasses, etc.).
  • Strong attention to detail and quality assurance standards.
  • Ability to work effectively under supervision and assist in training new employees.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Vocational or technical training in Machining Technology, Precision Manufacturing, CNC Programming and Operation, or a related trade; or equivalent combination of education and experience is a plus but not required.
  • Certifications in Forklift or OSHA 10 or 30 for safety awareness is a plus.
  • Experience operating a forklift or handling materials safely is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure projects are completed accurately and meet GEM Equipment quality standards.
  • Operate CNC and/or manual machines under supervision.
  • Load, save, and manage CNC programs.
  • Adjust offsets to maintain part tolerances.
  • Change and set up tooling as needed.
  • Monitor machine fluid levels and add fluids when necessary.
  • Complete all required paperwork for assigned projects.
  • Prepare requisition slips for materials not specified in job orders to maintain accurate inventory.
  • Load and unload parts efficiently.
  • Assist in training new employees as required.
  • Operate a forklift safely.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, sweeping after each shift.
  • Possess and maintain personal precision tools.
  • Possess and wear required protective equipment (PPE), including: Steel-toed boots Safety glasses
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
