Requirements

  • Proven experience in mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical maintenance.
  • Strong welding, fabrication, and cutting skills.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Proven communicator with experience working effectively across diverse teams and fostering strong customer relationships to drive success.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to OSHA standards including lock-out tag-out procedures.
  • Hands-on experience across all machine centers in the mill, including proficiency with all rolling stock.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 18+ years old
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Mechanical aptitude (hands-on interest in fixing/building equipment; willingness to learn)
  • Basic math & measuring skills fractions/decimals, tape measure, basic geometry
  • Basic hand & power tool knowledge wrenches, sockets, torque basics, drills/grinders, safe tool use
  • Safety commitment able to follow LOTO , PPE, and written procedures
  • Physical capability lift/carry 50 lbs (or your site standard) stand/walk for long periods, climb ladders/stairs, work in heat/cold/noise
  • Shift flexibility nights/weekends/overtime and occasional call-ins as needed
  • Communication & teamwork can take direction, ask questions, document work, work with operations

Nice To Haves

  • 1–2 years industrial, mechanical, or construction experience (or strong hobby/mechanical background)
  • Vocational/technical training: industrial maintenance, welding, machining, mechanics
  • OSHA 10 , First Aid/CPR , forklift , aerial lift , rigging/signal person
  • Basic experience with any of: bearings/seals , belts/chains, couplings alignment (laser or dial indicator exposure) pumps/gearboxes/motors basic welding/cutting (MIG, stick, oxy-fuel)
  • Ability to read basic prints/schematics and equipment manuals
  • Familiarity with CMMS/work orders (even as a helper)
  • “Apprentice 1” performance expectations (good to include)
  • Shows up on time, ready, and works safely
  • Learns names/uses of tools and parts; keeps work area organized
  • Can complete supervised tasks: lube routes, simple component swaps, belt changes, clean/inspect
  • Demonstrates growth toward core skills: rigging basics, precision measurement, troubleshooting steps
  • 6–24 months experience in a sawmill, wood products, logging, or heavy industrial setting (maintenance, production, or laborer)
  • Familiarity with sawmill systems such as: conveyors, chain decks, infeed/outfeed lines debarker, chipper, hog, screens, blowers kiln/fans , dust collection systems hydraulics (log handling, clamp arms, positioners)
  • sawmill saw systems exposure (bandsaw/circle saw) is a plus
  • Basic mechanical exposure to: bearings & seals , pillow blocks, sprockets/chain, belts/pulleys gearboxes/reducers , motors, couplings, sheaves lubrication routes and PM checks
  • Welding/cutting experience (any of the following): stick/MIG, oxy-fuel/torch, plasma cutting; ability to perform safe hot work
  • Rigging & lifting exposure: chains/slings/shackles, hoists, come-alongs; knows hand signals and load safety basics
  • Experience working around dusty, noisy environments with strict PPE: respirators/dust masks, hearing protection, face shields
  • Knowledge of safety programs common in mills: LOTO , hot work permits, confined space awareness, machine guarding awareness
  • Comfortable with shift work, production uptime pressure , and responding to breakdowns
  • Basic familiarity with CMMS/work order systems (even simple work order completion)

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe work environment and ensure compliance with OSHA standards, including lock-out/tag-out procedures.
  • Perform fabrication, welding, and cutting work.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and repairs on machine centers and rolling stock.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues to minimize downtime.
  • Manage and maintain spare parts inventory effectively.
  • Analyze and resolve complex repairs, including estimating repair times.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with team members and customers.
  • Work hands-on across the mill at machine centers and with all rolling stock.
  • Maintain excellent attendance and reliability.
