About The Position

The Opportunity: As a Maintenance Mechanic 2 for Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center (IAREC), you are responsible for maintaining and repairing a wide range of facility systems, including structural components, plumbing, HVAC, boilers, steam systems, and greenhouse operations. You troubleshoot issues, perform repairs, conduct routine inspections, and support construction and renovation projects. You also provide backup operation, maintenance, and repair for water, septic, and boiler systems to ensure safety and regulatory compliance. In this role, you operate equipment such as forklifts, backhoes, and landscaping machinery for material handling, excavation, and grounds restoration. This position requires strong technical skills, effective problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to manage projects while adhering to safety protocols. Additional Information: This is a full time (100 % FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime eligible. Monthly Salary: $5,011 to $5,812 | Range 48G Steps G - M | Successful candidates are typically hired at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28. In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Requirements

  • High school graduation and four years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade; OR equivalent education/experience.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor and work outside in all types of weather.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.
  • Understanding of construction and industrial safety.
  • Understanding of building construction materials and methods.
  • Understanding of plumbing including threaded pipe assembly, PVC piping systems, copper piping soldering and crimping.
  • Ability to become forklift certified within two months of hire.
  • Ability to read and understand technical documents, installation instructions and blueprints.
  • Ability to use measuring and layout tools.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records including inspection logs, complete work orders etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a research or higher education facility.
  • Experience with large onsite septic systems.
  • Experience with potable water systems requirements, including testing/inspections and maintenance procedures.
  • Experience with boiler operations, maintenance and safety protocols.
