About The Position

Founded in 1982, El Puente is a youth-centered organization that uses the arts and education to advance racial and environmental justice. Our mission is to inspire and nurture leadership for peace and justice, serving as a human rights institution in New York City and Puerto Rico with national and international impact. Position Overview: El Puente is seeking a reliable, detail-oriented, and community-minded Maintenance Worker / Cleaner to support our Cornerstone Leadership Center. This role plays a critical part in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment where youth and families can learn, grow, and thrive. The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, demonstrates strong initiative, and understands the importance of creating and maintaining spaces that reflect care, dignity, and respect for our community. This position reports to the Program Director and works collaboratively with program staff to ensure the facility remains well-maintained and prepared for daily activities and special events.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Prior experience in cleaning, custodial, or maintenance work
• Ability to lift and move moderate-weight items (up to 50 lbs)
• Reliable, punctual, and able to work both independently and collaboratively
• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain organized, clean spaces
• Demonstrated commitment to El Puente’s mission, values, and community-centered approach, including respect, equity, and creating safe environments for youth and families

Nice To Haves

• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• Experience working in youth-centered organizations, schools, or community-based settings
• Basic familiarity with facility upkeep and minor maintenance tasks

Responsibilities

• Maintain cleanliness throughout rooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and sanitizing surfaces
• Clean and disinfect restrooms and ensure supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper are fully stocked
• Empty trash and recycling regularly and maintain proper waste disposal practices
• Disinfect high-touch surfaces daily to support a healthy environment
• Monitor the facility and promptly report maintenance or repair needs
• Support minor repairs such as replacing light bulbs or securing fixtures when appropriate
• Maintain entryways and outdoor areas to ensure safe and accessible walkways
• Assist with setting up and breaking down rooms for programs, meetings, and community events
• Support staff with moving furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed
• Ensure shared spaces such as gyms and multipurpose rooms are clean and ready for use
• Follow all health and safety procedures and proper use of cleaning supplies
• Maintain organized storage areas for equipment and supplies
• Respond promptly to spills or hazards to help prevent accidents
• Work closely with program staff and supervisors to address facility needs
• Communicate supply needs and maintenance concerns in a timely manner
• Contribute to a respectful, team-oriented environment
