This position is available within the University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology (DIT). The Manager for Critical Infrastructure is responsible for the planning and operation of DIT critical infrastructure at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) and other locations supported by DIT. This includes operations, changes, expansions, and strategic planning of all DIT computer rooms, data centers, campus network hubs, outside cable plant infrastructure, and off-site leased data center space. The position supervises two full-time Data Center Technicians, and will spend considerable time in hands-on work with the Technicians to care for the infrastructure. The position interacts with multiple campus departments using DIT Colocation services. The position will liaise with Facilities Management and the Department of Public Safety for support of building utilities in support of critical infrastructure. The position collaborates with service providers (wired and mobile) in support of their infrastructure needs in servicing the College Park campus. This position will oversee the extensive outside cable plant (OSP) infrastructure on campus. This includes strategic planning and operations of pathways and cable distribution on campus. The position will be involved in major construction projects requiring or modifying the OSP infrastructure. This position is also responsible for instituting the appropriate controls, processes, and best practices that ensure compliance with UMD, the University System of Maryland, and the State of Maryland audit requirements. This position is considered essential and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergency to help maintain the continuity of University services. Physical Demands: Working in a critical facilities requires physical stamina for lifting (30-75 lbs.), standing/walking long hours, and navigating challenging environments (noise, cold/hot temperatures, harsh lighting). Critical facilities may include construction sites, mechanical/electrical spaces, and other non-public spaces that are exceptions to physical ADA requirements. This position must be able to move about challenging spaces. Key physical needs include fine motor skills for cabling, flexibility for working in low racks and cabinets, good balance for ladders, and resilience against hard floors and loud noise.
