About The Position

Reporting to the Regional Manager, this position effectively leads, manages, plans, and ensures maximum operating efficiency of the transportation crews and operations staff at the San Jose location of Corovan. The Operations Manager will work closely with management to ensure the business continues to grow with its existing services, while potentially developing new business lines. This position will work closely with internal stakeholders to improve the business operations, enhance business efficiency and drive profitability. Effectively plans, organizes, leads and controls their Operations Department. Plans for and organizes required human resources, physical assets, and vendors required to achieve planned objectives. Develops effective service mechanisms and provides departmental leadership to ensure customer satisfaction. Responsible for regulatory and safety compliance. Responsible for continuous capacity increases to achieve growth objectives of the branch. Responsible for maintaining minimum departmental operating gross profit margin. In addition, the Operations Manager is responsible for managing all transportation operations and customer relations. This position will also work closely with the sales team to ensure customers’ needs are met, and ensures that transportation in or out of the warehouse are handled quickly, safely, and efficiently. This will include oversight of transportation equipment, drivers and team members. This position will also have the responsibility for overseeing strategies to improve employee engagement to foster a positive work environment. In addition, this position will be responsible for recruiting and oversee training of new hires. The Operations Manager will also be responsible for the financial performance of the department by promoting new services to existing and new customers.

Requirements

  • Strong skills in managing people and engaging a workforce; experience interviewing, coaching, developing, disciplining and retaining employees
  • Strong PC skills including intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience using HRIS to enter and approve employee data, and OE 3.1 (ERP).

  • Must be familiar with current software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Visio.
  • Must be familiar with Corovan’s WebPortal software.
  • Must be familiar with and able to train others using COV University PowerPoint Slides and various moving equipment and its proper usage such as dollies, carts, pads, straps, pallet jacks, forklifts, ramps, lift gates, and all specialty equipment including but not limited to roll-a-lifts, Genie lifts safe jacks, J bars, etc., etc.
  • Must be familiar with basic systems furniture nomenclature and be able to identify upon sight, the major lines of the three major manufactures; Steelcase, Herman Miller and Haworth.
  • Must be familiar with project management reports such as Gantt and Pert charts and understand and interpret cut sheets.
  • Must be able to accurately estimate all move, install and tech projects to determine manpower, trucks and equipment necessary to complete the tasks required.
  • Must be able to produce red-line and stick drawings. Has an understanding of space planning fundamentals and building code along with training in Giza and Auto Cad to produce simple CAD drawings as required.
  • Must be able to conduct a customer pre-move meeting, post destination signage and communicate all standard move and install protocol to the customers.
  • Must be familiar with laboratory moving including packing of lab equipment, fine tune and detail work, PC disconnect and reconnect and must possess good customer service skills.
  • Must be familiar with the O&I (Office & Industrial) move process and understand the move labeling and directional signage.
  • Must be familiar with the Corotech and Corotrak processes and understand the labeling and scanning process enough to explain it adequately to crews and customers.
  • Must complete all levels of Corovan University training through PMIII.
  • Must have successfully participated in at least three Six Sigma projects.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent of education and experience preferred.
  • Five (5) years of experience managing moving operations, dispatch, transportation crews, trucks, customer relations, and planning related to moves.
  • Experience managing people in a commercial moving, logistics or supply chain required.
  • Familiarity with shipment options, legal issues, government regulations, and safety procedures is required.
  • Preferred knowledge of local transportation routes.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Proficient in MS Office, including MS Excel with the skills to create and format spreadsheets, write formulas, and produce pivot tables required.
  • Valid California driver’s license is required.
  • Valid driving record that meets the company’s insurance carrier’s requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred to be a licensed and approved Class C driver and forklift certified, but not required.
  • Experience working and applying business improvement tools such as Lean Six Sigma and/or ISO preferred.
  • Experience developing a strategy and implementing new business lines and/or products preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively manages employees (staff and field service workers), providing leadership, motivation, development, training and discipline in order to promote quality performance and achievement of objectives
  • Helps select new employees, trains them, provides work direction and coaching, and engages with them to develop their career objectives and meet customer requirements
  • Ensures that deliverables on performance reviews, compensation changes, cage details, safety, fleet management, and timecards are accurately kept and sent to corporate.
  • Deliver Corovan University training on transportation and other safety and listening meeting topics.
  • Manages all San Jose job and account surveys, and employee training.
  • Review and train crew leaders on all company policies, and procedures etc.
  • Provides for the protection, maintenance and custody of company and customer assets through adherence to federal state guidelines and Corovan policies.
  • Provides input in developing annual branch business plan and department budgets, objectives. Manages against budget during the fiscal year to meet or exceed planned operations objectives and gross operating profit margins by service line.
  • Manages and ensures maximum operating efficiency
  • Utilizes the Order Entry System to check rates, rules, and setup of customer.
  • Works in cooperation with the Sales Department to understand how the agreement was sold and how the customer was set up in the system.
  • Works with the transportation team to ensure they are capturing the bill of lading and manpower information correctly.
  • Works with leadership and cross-functional teams to develop and assist with strategic alignment and operational account reviews.
  • Handles all blue file operational checks and provides input on billing requirements for blue file jobs.
  • Effectively manages operations department vendors ensuring cost effectiveness and providing the level of quality and responsiveness required to meet customer expectations.
  • Increase safety focus and compliance.
  • Interfaces with customers to resolve issues, walk sites, survey sites, and develop plans on how to set up projects for success and takes detailed notes of each meeting.
  • Effectively manages operations department vendors ensuring cost effectiveness and providing the level of quality and responsiveness required to meet customer expectations.
  • Oversees ROI accounts by regular meetings with account managers, project managers, coordinators, salespersons and customer contacts to ensure complete customer satisfaction and execution against company and customer account objectives.
