About the Role We’re looking for a highly skilled and detail-oriented Permit Manager to own the permitting process for our solar and battery storage installations in California. This role is central to ensuring that our projects meet all local and state code requirements and are approved efficiently by authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) and local fire departments. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise in solar and storage permitting, experience with tools like SolarApp+ and Symbium, and a proactive, solutions-oriented approach to working with AHJs and internal teams. In this role, you’ll be responsible for reviewing technical plans, submitting permits, and ensuring compliance with local regulations. You’ll collaborate cross-functionally with project managers, designers, and installation partners to ensure smooth project execution from design to installation.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in permitting for solar + storage installations in California.
  • Hands-on experience with SolarApp+ and Symbium platforms for permitting and compliance.
  • Strong technical knowledge of solar system designs, electrical codes, and building codes relevant to California.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with AHJs to resolve permitting issues and expedite issuance.
  • Ability to interpret complex plans and identify potential code compliance issues.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced startup environment, managing multiple projects at once.
  • Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a collaborative and solution-oriented approach.
  • A proven background in managing and developing processes for external resources to efficiently support our efforts in permit submission and approval as we scale.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of interconnection and utility-facing processes.
  • Prior experience defining or improving internal processes for scalability.
  • NABCEP certification or equivalent technical training.

Responsibilities

  • Permit Management – Lead the permitting process for residential and commercial solar projects in California, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes and regulations.
  • Permit Metrics – Analyze trends and bottlenecks across AHJs, vendors, and regions, and drive targeted process improvements.
  • Vendor Management – Onboard and manage permit vendors for residential and commercial solar + storage projects, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes and regulations.
  • Plan Review – Review and interpret technical plans and designs, providing feedback on code compliance and working with internal teams to make necessary adjustments.
  • AHJ Communication – Serve as the primary point of contact for AHJs, ensuring that all necessary information is submitted and working through any issues or pushbacks.
  • Permitting Tools – Utilize SolarApp+ and Symbium to streamline the permitting process and ensure timely submissions and approvals.
  • Process Optimization – Define and implement best-in-class permitting practices, helping scale operations while maintaining efficiency and accuracy. Implement systems to proactively follow up with AHJs to ensure permits are approved in a timely manner
  • Collaboration – Work closely with internal teams, including project managers, designers, and installation partners, to keep projects on track and resolve any permitting-related issues.
  • Compliance Updates – Stay up-to-date on changes to local, state, and federal regulations that may impact permitting processes and incorporate new requirements into operations.
