About The Position

Responsible for all aspects of maintaining the University’s ability to participate in the Veterans Administration’s educational assistance programs and serves as the VA School Certifying Official (SCO) for Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Serves as the primary liaison for all military community students in transitioning to the university and integration to the campus and campus support facilities. Provides support in the daily operation of the Financial Aid & Veteran Services Office

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years supervisory experience
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office suite of programs, i.e. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality of student records.
  • High level of written and oral communication skills and the ability to deal effectively and cooperatively with students, staff, and University personnel.
  • Experience working with veterans in a university student service setting
  • Some Accounting experience
  • Experience with Banner
  • Experience with transmitting data electronically to the Department of Education, Veteran Affairs, and the Texas Veterans Commission
  • Knowledge of VA-Once Software
  • Experience in Client Relationship Management Software
  • Experience in batch reporting and processing in a mainframe environment
  • Knowledge of The Hazelwood Act

Responsibilities

  • Develops and administers programs and services at the University by understanding the unique needs of veteran and active military students and seeking to remove barriers to success for these students.
  • Assists students in the application process for active military, veteran, or dependent benefits by helping them to complete appropriate and required forms, advising them of their rights and responsibilities concerning active military, veteran, and dependent benefits, and provides them with information about the status of their benefits.
  • Manages the daily flow of direct services to veterans to include counseling students and parents regarding the various veterans’ education benefits, financial aid and scholarships opportunities, eligibility criteria, and application processes on and off campus.
  • Responsible for verifying eligibility and certifying students for veteran benefits to the VA and State of Texas.
  • Creates, maintains and archives VA and Hazlewood student records for students utilizing VA and State of Texas education benefits.
  • Calculates, memos, and disburses Ch31 & Ch33 VA tuition and fee payments and Hazlewood Exemption amounts to student accounts.
  • Performs reconciliation of university’s VA financial account.
  • Monitors compliance with federal and state regulations; prepares and submits reports to the appropriate federal and state entities.
  • Interact with VA officials and Texas Veterans Commission to remain knowledgeable about proposed and enacted federal legislation which affects veterans’ educational programs.
  • Manages and coordinates the DOD Tuition Assistance program with the Bursar.
  • University point-of-contact for the DOD TA MOU and conducts annual review of MOU to ensure compliance with all requirements.
  • Coordinates with other offices (e.g. Academic Advisement and Student Success Center, Enrollment Services, Student Life, Career Center, etc.) regarding the effective and efficient delivery of services to military community students.
  • Works closely with Academic Advisors and utilizes the Eagle Connect software to maximize military community students’ academic success and graduation.
  • Obtains approval for VA Work-Study positions as needed for the effective and timely processing of certification of enrollment for VA Education Benefits for student veteran and their dependents.
  • Hires, trains, and provides primary supervision of VA Work-Study personnel.
  • Coordinate schedules with FAD to accommodate shared usage of work space and tools.
  • Maintains ongoing networking with external veteran-oriented groups, veteran service organizations, and other community and regional resources for referral as needed.
  • Manages Veteran Services webpage and ensures currency and accuracy of information and internal/external links.
  • Assists the FAD with special reports and projects when needed.
  • Provides insight of departmental needs as related to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the financial aid and veteran services operations.
  • Available to travel for training workshops and university related activities.
