About The Position

The Tampa Bay Times is looking for a managing editor to run the core day-to-day operations of our newsroom — overseeing our news and engagement teams. The ideal candidate brings impeccable news judgment and a fierce determination to get more eyeballs on our journalism, especially more local readers, and to reach them more quickly. The Times, winner of 14 Pulitzer Prizes, is among the best local news operations in America. We are independent. And we’re locally owned by the nonprofit Poynter Institute. Our stock and trade is distinctive local journalism that informs Tampa Bay and Florida.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or communications or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years in a significant leadership role in a newsroom.
  • Strong understanding of the First Amendment and media law.
  • Demonstrated track record of recruiting and hiring.
  • Commitment to journalistic standards of fairness, ethics and independence.

Responsibilities

  • Lead fast-paced, enterprising coverage of Tampa Bay and Florida, prioritizing scoops and high-impact stories that matter most to our audience.
  • Hold powerful institutions and individuals accountable through fair-minded, rigorous and courageous journalism.
  • Conceive, execute and refine coverage strategies that grow and engage our audience through a variety of story treatments, newsletters, news alerts and social outreach.
  • Embrace creative thinking and innovative approaches to storytelling, encouraging experimentation and bold ideas across the newsroom.
  • Champion relaying information to our audience through nimble, quick alternative story formats as much as they champion the 100-inch narrative or investigation. (We do all of that here!)
  • Collaborate across departments to develop and elevate dynamic digital products that showcase the organization’s journalism.
  • Train, coach and mentor journalists at all career stages, fostering professional growth and newsroom excellence.
  • Demonstrate curiosity, competitiveness and a strong sense of news judgment in daily decision-making.
  • Make timely, ethical editorial decisions under pressure, maintaining urgency without sacrificing accuracy or fairness.
  • Maintain a strategic, big-picture perspective while exercising meticulous attention to detail.
  • Serve as a steady, approachable leader who remains calm and decisive during breaking news and crisis situations.
  • Elevate and amplify the work of team members, ensuring credit, visibility and support for their contributions.
  • Manage multiple priorities simultaneously, balancing competing demands in a high-velocity news environment.
  • Successfully lead and manage news teams, setting clear expectations, workflows and performance standards.
