Hear about the Caterpillar Experience for yourself Role Definition Drivetrain Operations has an opening for a Manufacturing Engineer position within the Electric Drivetrain Manufacturing Engineering team located in Mossville, Illinois. The Manufacturing Engineer role is an important function within manufacturing engineering team, with a focus on technical process support for manufacturing safety, quality, cost, and velocity requirements. The candidate will be responsible for providing technical expertise required to design, develop, and implement manufacturing processes/systems within electric motor assembly. Incumbent will interface directly with multiple teams including engineering, operations, logistics, supply Chain, product change control and safety. In this role you will work both independently and as part of a team to maintain and improve processes and systems used in manufacturing. In addition, Manufacturing Engineers function as a specialist and subject matter expert for technical planning capable of meeting and exceeding customer requirements.

Requirements

  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking : Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
  • Engineering - MFG : Knowledge of processes, techniques and methods of engineering in a manufacturing environment; ability to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems and processes that safely realize a desired objective or invention.
  • Lean Manufacturing : Knowledge of the philosophy, principles and implementation approaches of lean manufacturing; ability to integrate and implement lean manufacturing philosophy into existing production and management processes.
  • Manufacturing Processes : Knowledge of existing product manufacturing methods, technologies and processes; ability to execute, plan, manage and monitor the entire manufacturing process.
  • Problem Solving : Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.
  • Robotic Process Automation (RPA) : Knowledge of techniques and processes of robotic process automation (RPA); ability to develop and deploy RPA solutions in various industries.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent technology degree is desired.
  • In lieu of a degree, 2+ years in an electrical motor manufacturing support role.

Nice To Haves

  • Thorough experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Ability to learn and manage new computer applications (VPPA, MESA, Capp+, PINpoint)
  • Experience with reading and interpreting engineering prints and Bill of Materials (BOM)
  • Experience with electric motor manufacturing
  • Experience with CQMS certification requirements, NPI, APQP, and PPAP processes (Control Plans, PFMEA, Process Flow Diagrams)
  • Thorough knowledge of manufacturing concepts (Lean Manufacturing, 6-Sigma, in process validations (IPV’s), Poka-Yoke design, System/Tooling Controls, etc.)
  • Ability to build strong relationships with various stakeholders at all levels

Responsibilities

  • Address daily process issues, implement innovative solutions, and assess the effectiveness of modifications while clearly communicating improvements.
  • Identify root causes and implement corrective actions to address Safety, Quality, Velocity, and Cost opportunities identified through projects.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain shop floor processes managing standard work, routings/work instructions, BOM/MBOM, ergonomic requirements, tooling, lifting devices, SFMEA, PFMEA, control plans, flow diagrams.
  • Assess and recommend systems, procedures, training, and equipment based on input from shop floor users, operations, safety, design engineering.
  • Manage expense and capital requirements as it relates to assembly areas, NPI, product capacity increases, equipment replacement and day to day continuous process improvement requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement Provides technical expertise and guidance to the value stream for electric motor manufacturing processes.
