About The Position

Eaton’s Research Labs (ERL) has an exciting Engineering Intern position in the Advanced Manufacturing group to support research and technology development in emerging technology programs. In this role, the individual will be responsible for researching and developing advanced insulation material for power conversion applications. Materials specialization in polymer, potting materials, fillers, nanoparticles/microparticles is a plus. The individual is expected to have a broad working knowledge in power conversion topics such as AC-DC, DC-DC conversion, Semiconductors, Magnetics and Power Electronics. You will work cross functionally across other materials teams, mechanical and electrical engineer within ERL and other Business Units to brainstorm and develop compelling ideas and technologies on material formulation and processing to support power conversion system. The individual is also expected to contribute to technical presentations, journal articles, white papers as well as IP generation within this role. This position is in Southfield, MI.

Requirements

  • Graduate student (preferred PhD student) in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Materials Engineering.
  • 1 years of experience.
  • Master of Science degree in materials engineering or related discipline.
  • Demonstrable knowledge in parts, materials and process selection, manufacturing support, and qualification of materials.
  • Fundamentals in thermal, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, electrical insulation applicable to power electronics, electromagnetics, power conversion, including creating specifications, designing technical solution concepts, and building and testing prototypes to validate models/hypotheses and documenting results.
  • Good English communication and presentation skills (oral and written)
  • Experience presenting value proposition of new technologies

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in polymer materials, material property measurement, material formulation, processing is a plus.
  • Appreciation for the trade-offs necessary to achieve designs that meet performance requirements and cost objective solutions.
  • Experience with AI/ML for material and process optimization is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate technical leadership around material processing, material selection and analysis.
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend combined material, design, and manufacturing processes that best meet the application requirements.
  • Accelerate material and process optimization experiment using AI/ML informatic tools.
  • Specify, plan, and oversee analytical and experimental work qualifying the proposed materials and process options.
  • Perform hands-on design, analysis, and experimental work as needed to demonstrate technical feasibility.
  • Develop the strategy, roadmap and execution plan for progressing the polymer projects from ideas to products.
  • Work closely with experimentalists to design experiments to predict and validate the properties of multi-additive composite systems.
  • Compile and interpret analysis and test results providing conclusions, recommendations, and inputs for other engineers and management to act upon.
