About The Position

Leidos’ Defense Systems is seeking a Materials & Process Engineer to support the Advanced Materials Department. The Advanced Materials Department is a multi-disciplinary team that provides materials engineering expertise for every phase of a program. With backgrounds in materials science, chemistry/chemical engineering, physics, among others, the department has experience in executing a variety of efforts from R&D, to prototype development, to supporting design and build tasks for manufacturing. Beyond subject matter expertise, the department has the analysis equipment, multi-physics modelling capability and experimental lab space to support activities ranging from proof-of-concept experimentation to manufacturing support. Primary Responsibilities. As an integral member of the Advanced Materials Department, the successful candidate will serve as Materials & Process Engineer. This position will balance multiple activities including but not limited to: - Strong verbal and written skills along with a practical knowledge of data analysis and interpretation of results - Support multiple Leidos programs in the areas of material selection, composites, ceramics, process improvement opportunities, root cause and corrective action (RCCA) investigations, Parts, Materials, & Processes (PM&P) Plans, and qualification activities - Provide M&P support to mechanical and aerospace design and drawings development and manufacturing process improvement activities - Coordinate with safety and other members of the department to create testing plans and procedures - Perform testing in the investigation of materials and process non-conformance issues - Work within the Advanced Materials Dept to ensure all material and process selections, process improvements, and material characterization activities meet program goals and objectives - Conduct a variety of materials characterization and mechanical tests, including test planning, writing and editing procedures, and authoring test reports - Solving engineering challenges with both analytical and experimental approaches - Candidate must be self-motivated and be capable of functioning effectively in a fast-paced environment

Requirements

  • Candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or one of the Physical Sciences from an ABET accredited institution
  • Candidates must have a strong technical background in materials processes, materials selection, metallography and/or materials analysis with at least 2+ years of demonstrated experience
  • Experience executing M&P and materials testing activity directly supporting projects or programs (aerospace or defense preferred)
  • Must be a resident of North Alabama area or willing to relocate in order to work on-site at the Huntsville, AL office
  • Candidate must be a US Citizen and possess (and be able to maintain) a DOD Secret Clearance or meet the eligibility to obtain (and maintain) a DOD Secret Clearance
  • Strong verbal and written skills along with a practical knowledge of data analysis and interpretation of results
  • Candidate must be self-motivated and be capable of functioning effectively in a fast-paced environment

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated background with 1 or more of the following analysis techniques: tensile testing, lap shear testing, metals testing (grain size, porosity, etc), composite materials analysis (microscopy, thermal, etc), quantitative analysis
  • Demonstrated background with 1 or more of the following analysis instruments: Load Frame Testing, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, SEM, TGA, TMA, XPS, XRD
  • Experience with non-metallic, engineered materials, such as polymer- or ceramic-matrix composites, polymers and sealing system, and/or high-temperature ceramics
  • Experience working with aerospace systems and materials
  • Familiarity with AMS, ASTM, NASA, MIL-STD, ISO 9001/AS 9100, ISO 17025, and/or other industry specifications.
