About The Position

This position will inspect materials in the field as requested or required during Construction, Maintenance or Design. Determine materials compliance with Department contract and procedural documents.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: the concepts, terminology, principles and analytical techniques of earthwork; engineering design, construction, production and/or operations
  • Skills in: using engineering tools, equipment and/or instruments
  • Ability to: operate a personal computer for word processing, spreadsheet and database applications; analyze and interpret engineering data; solve problems relating to engineering; perform technical engineering inspections; apply engineering quantitative techniques; plan, organize and coordinate work assignments; communicate engineering information effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; pick up to 50 pounds and move around uneven terrain without assistance
  • Must possess or obtain and maintain Earthwork Construction Level 1 Construction Training Qualification Program (CTQP), Earthwork Construction Level 2 Construction Training Qualification Program (CTQP), and Nuclear Radiation Safety Certificate.
  • Must pass or have passed Construction Math and Contract Plans Reading Self Study examinations.
  • Must have a valid class “E” Florida driver’s license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience using engineering or manufacturing tools, equipment and/or instruments or Prior experience operating a personal computer for word processing, spreadsheet, and/or database applications.
  • This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate project/process to determine current performance status, in the field. Make/recommend improvements to optimize delivery or improve results. Notify stakeholders of any changes to the project/process. Ensure project/process is consistent, predictable and repeatable.
  • Inspect materials in the field as requested or required during Construction, Maintenance or Design. Determine material compliance with Department contract and procedural documents. Inspect ongoing activities and documentation of materials related testing and inspection. Provide feedback and technical assistance to field personnel as appropriate. Document and report findings.
  • Perform Independent Assurance evaluations in the field as described in Department procedures and the Federal Aid Policy Guide. Perform these evaluations in an objective and professional manner. Document and report findings.
  • Support consultant contracts in accordance with applicable rules, laws and procedures. Review the consultant work effort. Review and comment on invoices.
  • Analyze materials data for contract and procedural compliance. Take timely action to report any errors in the data.
  • Review Quality Control plans, Construction plans, specifications, procedures and any other documents necessary to execute the Department’s mission. Provide clear comments as requested in time to be useful to the customer.
  • Perform field and/or laboratory testing in accordance with the applicable Florida Sampling and Testing Methods (FSTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) or American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test method. Report results precisely in the appropriate database. Keep all testing equipment calibrated and in good working order.
  • Provide materials related technical support to customers as requested. Provide support in time to meet the customers’ needs.
