About The Position

The Mechanical Design Engineer supports the AFCD Engineering and Operations teams with machine guarding design and implementation, equipment installation and upgrade projects.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED; College or relevant work experience
  • Advanced mechanical design and solid modeling expertise
  • Experience with vendor development and negotiation.
  • Ability to reverse engineer existing layouts and equipment to support upgrade projects.
  • Understanding of machine guarding standards and requirements.
  • Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work independently and with others across the organization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong project management, organization and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to apply knowledge of mechanical and / or electrical systems to complex problems
  • Proficient with Solidworks; Some experience with Microsoft PowerPoint, Project and Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or Computer Integrated Manufacturing
  • Experience in blown and cast film manufacturing

Responsibilities

  • Understand and follow all safety policies to ensure no incidents.
  • Design, develop and implement machine safety guarding upgrades on existing equipment across the business group plants.
  • Generate mechanical designs including line and facility layouts, machine upgrades, and other projects as assigned.
  • Provide electrical / mechanical support and technical expertise throughout project life cycle.
  • Work without direct supervision to lead the design, set-up and integration of equipment and upgrades.
  • Optimize the risk and operation of new and existing equipment.
  • Manage supplier relationships, define and negotiate project requirements and establish equipment specifications.
  • Collaborate with plant personnel on risk assessments, training instructions and standard operating procedures for use in equipment implementation.
  • Train plant production and technical departments on the operations and maintenance of equipment.
  • Participate in all aspects of cost savings, continuous improvement and innovation initiatives.
  • Preferred location is in the Midwest with the ability to travel (~50%) to manufacturing plants and suppliers.
