About The Position

Industrial Electric Mfg. (IEM) is the largest independent full-line manufacturer of custom power distribution systems in North America. Founded more than 75 years ago in Fremont, California, IEM grew alongside Silicon Valley and today operates over 1.7 million square feet of manufacturing capacity. With $1B+ in annual sales and 10,000+ commissioned projects across technology, data centers, commercial, energy, utilities, healthcare, industrial, and infrastructure markets, IEM continues to deliver exceptional product quality, dependable service, and the flexibility to meet complex technical requirements at scale. The Mechanical Engineer – Maintenance of Line (MOL) supports and sustains the accuracy, manufacturability, and production readiness of IEM’s active medium voltage power distribution product designs across all facilities. This hands-on role ensures the ongoing health of existing product lines by executing MOL activities that allow project and design engineering teams to remain focused on DTO (DesigntoOrder) delivery. Responsibilities include maintaining engineering standards, resolving production issues, and driving continuous improvement, with scope and autonomy varying depending on experience level.

Requirements

  • Understanding of DTO/custom engineering environments (preferred).
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, tolerances, fasteners, alignment, and structural components.
  • Familiarity with root cause analysis tools and continuous improvement methodologies (CI, Lean, Six Sigma).
  • Experience with mediumvoltage switchgear or power industry equipment (preferred).
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD; FEA exposure/experience is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of UL, CSA, and NEMA standards (UL 891 / UL 1558).
  • BSME or equivalent required for all levels.
  • Engineer I: 0–2 years experience in mechanical design, MOL, DTO, or relevant internship.
  • Engineer II: 1–3 years of experience in mechanical design, MOL, or DTO engineering.
  • EIT certification or progression toward PE licensure preferred across all levels.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical and assembly issues, performing root cause analysis and implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support or lead MOL engineering projects with complexity appropriate to experience level.
  • Collaborate with production, quality, manufacturing engineering, and electrical engineering teams to resolve issues quickly and effectively.
  • Act as a technical resource for field issues, disruptions, and quality concerns.
  • Develop 3D models and 2D fabrication/coordination drawings appropriate to skill level.
  • Maintain, update, or own mechanical design standards, material specifications, SOPs, and work instruct
  • Participate in or lead peer reviews to ensure technical accuracy and compliance.
  • Support or lead mechanical root cause analysis for line stoppages, field issues, and quality escapes.
