About The Position

As a Mechanical Engineer, Product Design at Dyna Robotics, you will own the mechanical design of our robotic products from concept through production. You will develop concept- to production-intent CAD for complex surfaced enclosures and structural components, working closely with industrial design, mechanical structures, electrical engineering, and our JDM manufacturing partners. This role demands deep expertise in advanced surfacing, NX (or equivalent high-end CAD), a sense for human-factor design, and a strong understanding of DFM for a variety of manufacturing options like injection molding, machining, and sheet metal. You will be a core contributor to taking our robots from prototype to field-grade product. This role is based on-site 5 days a week in Redwood City, California.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in mechanical product design for consumer electronics, robotics, automotive, or similar industries.
  • Expert-level proficiency in NX, CATIA, or equivalent parametric CAD with strong freeform and multi-surface modeling capabilities.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating complex-geometry parts (organic shapes, multi-surface assemblies, handheld or wearable devices) taken to tooling and production.
  • Deep understanding of injection molding, machining, sheet metal, and associated DFM principles.
  • Experience managing mechanical BOMs and working with CM/JDM partners through the build cycle.
  • Hands-on prototype fabrication skills (3D printing, basic shop tools).
  • Strong ownership and collaboration skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with mechanism design (linkages, cams, springs, gear trains).
  • Familiarity with GD&T and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience with FEA for structural or thermal validation.
  • Background in robotics or electromechanical product development.
  • Experience working in a high-growth startup environment.
  • Class-A surfacing experience (automotive, consumer electronics).

Responsibilities

  • Complex Surface Modeling: Develop advanced multi-surface geometry in NX (or equivalent) for handheld devices, enclosures, and articulating robotic components. Translate ID intent and internal packaging constraints into manufacturable geometry across organic, ergonomic, and high-curvature shapes.
  • Detailed Mechanical Design: Own part-level and assembly-level design for structural, cosmetic, and functional components including snap fits, bosses, rib patterns, sealing features, and cable routing.
  • Human factors engineering: Design parts and products for use by robot operators in their day to day, incorporating comfort, ease of use, and intuitive ergonomics.
  • DFM Ownership: Drive design-for-manufacturing reviews with vendors and JDM partners. Specify CMF, profiles, and tolerances. Own the mechanical BOM.
  • Mechanism Design: Design and validate kinematic mechanisms such as hinges, latches, linkages, and deployment features as needed across the product line.
  • Cross-Functional Integration: Work closely with EE (PCB keep-outs, connector placement, thermal), ID (design intent, CMF), and firmware (sensor mounting, actuator integration) to ensure the mechanical design meets system requirements.
  • Prototype-to-Production: Support prototype builds, first article inspections, and early production runs. Identify and resolve mechanical issues found during EVT/DVT/PVT.
  • JDM Collaboration: Partner with our manufacturing partners on tooling reviews, tolerance stack-ups, and assembly process definition.
