About The Position

Work as a member of a development team and oversee the design development, integration and testing of various hardware and mechanical components for high frequency sonar systems in the Advanced Technology Laboratory (ATL).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability in mechanical engineering.
  • Exposure to interfacing with vendors and machine shops to procure mechanical components.
  • Exposure to geometric dimensioning and tolerancing per ASME Y14.5 (either in a professional or academic setting).
  • Exposure to design of mechanical parts and assemblies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, maintain a professional demeanor, work as a team member with and without daily supervision, multitask in a professional or academic setting, Ability to work within an environment with rapidly changing priorities, and effectively communicate with all groups of people.
  • Able to work under pressure and accept supervision.
  • Regular and punctual attendance.
  • US Citizen: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in mechanical design and specification of electronic printed circuit card assemblies and thermal cooling systems.
  • Experience or willingness to learn software coding.
  • Experience or exposure to finite element analysis (FEA) for structural analysis of mechanical components using SolidWorks Simulation or equivalent software.
  • Experience or exposure to electronics packaging and design.
  • Experience drafting mechanical parts and assemblies as well as cable assemblies.
  • Experience soldering and performing manual machining or welding.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 with at least a 3.2 in relevant coursework.

Responsibilities

  • Assembly, test, production, and validation of hardware at the component and system level.
  • Design and development of mechanical packaging for high frequency sonar applications.
  • Development of structural mechanical components for electronics packaging .
  • Development of transducer and sonar assembly tooling.
  • Maintenance of design documentation, production procedures, and mechanical part and assembly drawings.
  • Other related functions as assigned.
