About The Position

Media Arts Education internship offers the opportunity to participate in the production of a multi-media learning experience teaching Philadelphia-area high school students. The Media Arts Education Intern will learn from assisting Media Instructors with project coordination and instruction by serving as the second instructor in a classroom of 10-20 high school or middle school students who are learning video production at WHYY. Media Arts Education Interns will work alongside Media Instructors during lesson planning and implementation and will guide students as they complete their video projects.

Requirements

  • Current junior and senior undergraduate student, or graduate student studying for a Bachelor’s degree in communications, media production, education, or a related field.
  • Proof of being fully vaccinated is required.

  • Cover letter discussing career goals, computer and language skills and any specific, relevant broadcasting or media experience
  • A two- or three-page writing sample
  • A Link, if appropriate, to media or digital work
  • A letter of recommendation from an individual who can speak to your relevant experience, background, skills and/or work ethic.
  • Individual must be a current junior or senior undergraduate student, graduate student or recent graduate (no more than three years from graduation date).
  • All WHYY employees are required to receive the COVID-19 vaccination.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience editing/shooting video and experience working with kids are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Complete intern training in technical skills and WHYY’s curriculum.
  • Attend each session of the class they are assisting with.
  • Guide at least one group of students through the process of producing a complete piece of media.
  • Keep track of students progress and ensure all students in the group are engaged in the process.
  • Attend regular meetings before class sessions to go over the plan for the day and suggest changes if necessary.
  • Meet with Instructor briefly after each class session to review the student's projects progress and to get coaching feedback on their teaching performance.
