About The Position

The Medical Assistant I (MA) is a key member of the medical care team who assists clinicians with providing high quality primary care. The MA assists in managing patient panels, daily flow and executes standing orders. The Native American Health Center is an accredited institution and adheres to the standards of excellence set forth by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA).

Requirements

  • Must have high school diploma or its equivalent and certificate of completion from an accredited Medical Assistant training program.
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish, both written and verbal is required, per operational need.
  • Comfortable asking questions regarding sensitive health topics (e.g. sexual partners).
  • Computer literate; familiarity with Microsoft Word.
  • Superior customer service skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and must be self-motivated.
  • Vaccination Level 1: Must be able to provide TB, Physical, seasonal flu and proof of Vaccination immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, TDAP & Hepatitis B, prior to start date. If vaccination records are more than 10 years old, titers are required to confirm immunity.
  • BLS/CPR certification must be obtained prior to start date and kept current at all times.
  • Ability to bend, lift, carry up to 25lbs. with relative ease.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working as a Medical Assistant is strongly desired.
  • State Certified Medical Assistant, having received certification from an accredited Medical Assisting program.
  • Experience working in a community health setting is preferable
  • Experience working with an EHR (i.e., Next Gen or Epic).

Responsibilities

  • ‘Red Carpet’ members by greeting them in a courteous, respectful and timely manner.
  • Lead daily care team huddles, using information gathered during chart preparation.
  • Ensure members are roomed and discharged, and are kept aware of any timing and schedule changes.
  • Prepare exam room for member visits and procedures. Keep exam room stocked and free from expired products.
  • Admit patients and conduct an initial interview; record results into the patients’ electronic health record at point of care.
  • Follow approved standing orders based on patient history, presenting symptoms, agreements made with clinician during huddle, and according to Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (CDPM) standards of care.
  • Check pulse, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height of patients. Record results into the patients’ electronic health record.
  • Assist providers with procedures as directed.
  • Assist in providing health education, as appropriate and as directed.
  • Perform blood tests, EKG's, visual acuity, urine and hearing tests; record results into the members’ electronic health record.
  • Administer injections to pediatric and adult members; record results into the members’ electronic health record.
  • Update patient demographics as reported by patient in the NextGen practice management system.
  • Data enter new members to immunization registry daily, and in a timely manner.
  • Collect member specimens for testing.
  • Assist provider with follow–up, as directed (i.e., outreach to patients, call labs for results, etc.)
  • Call No Show appointments to follow up and reschedule, if appropriate.
  • In preparation for scheduled patients, anticipate and procure relevant documents and data for the provider (i.e., consultation reports from specialists.)
  • Open and close lab according to departmental protocol, when assigned.
  • Execute Periodic Tasks, when assigned.
  • Assist in supply management by informing supervisor of supplies needing to be ordered before supply runs low.
  • Attend trainings and meetings when requested by supervisor.
  • Provide break coverage to other MA’s, when directed.
  • Act as Float MA when assigned and execute Floater duties, as requested.
  • Attend morning department huddles, if start time allows.
  • Assist in training incoming and incumbent Medical Assistants through shadowing.
  • Work with assigned provider, and in assigned discipline (i.e., family practice, internal medicine, perinatal,) as assigned.
  • Support Registered Nurses, nursing visits and nursing flow, when requested.
  • Support group visits, when assigned.
  • Support Quest Lab flow, when requested.
  • Work Saturday clinics, when assigned.
  • Provide interpretation, as requested, and in coordination with Flow Coordinator.
  • Member Care: Demonstrate understanding and apply working knowledge of safety policies and ensuring safe member practices.
  • Employee Safety: Safely performs all duties; follows required protective protocols to ensure personal safety as well the safety of others.
  • Must maintain compliance with ergonomic safety standards; be mindful of posture and regularly practice ergonomic stretches.
  • Quality Improvement: Actively participate in internal quality improvement teams and work with members proactively to drive quality improvement initiatives in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, and accreditation standards, when assigned.
  • HIPAA: Keep all protected health information (PHI) confidential and abide by HIPAA policies for the release and disclosure of any PHI. Will report unauthorized use of disclosure of PHI immediately, to supervisor or HIPAA security officer.
  • Work well under pressure, meet multiple and often competing deadlines.
  • At all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with supervisors, subordinates, colleagues, clients and the community.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
