About The Position

A Medical Office Assistant performs office support and clinical duties as assigned by a health professional in accordance with Maryland State law. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in an office and a clinic where there may be exposure to contagious diseases. Work usually requires minimal physical effort but may involve lifting and pushing.

Requirements

  • Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate and either completion of a phlebotomy course, or a Medical Assistant program which includes office practice, including data entry, clinical skills, venipuncture, and completion of an externship, which is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) of the American Medical Association in collaboration with the American Association of Medical Assistant, or by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or by the Accredited Commission for Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).
  • Have one year of experience in a clinical setting.
  • Have an Associate of Arts degree in a medical program that includes office practice, clinical skills and completion of an externship from an accredited college or university.
  • Some positions in this class may require employees to hold and maintain current certifications as a Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Medication Technician, issued by the Maryland Board of Nursing, or Phlebotomist.
  • Some candidates, once hired, must receive Hepatitis-B series immunizations or provide documentation of immunity by disease or vaccination.
  • Some candidates, once hired, must successfully complete a CPR course for adults, children and infants and maintain current certification.
  • Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointments to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.
  • All candidates, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.
