About The Position

As a Medical Technologist I in the Microbiology Laboratory at Howard University Hospital, you will perform complex clinical microbiological testing — delivering accurate, timely results that directly support the diagnosis and treatment of infectious disease in our patients. You will collaborate with pathologists, clinicians, and laboratory staff to uphold the highest standards of quality and patient safety within our microbiology program. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or a related field
  • Registry by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as MT(ASCP), or equivalent registry (e.g., H/C)

  • Core Lab, Hematology, and Chemistry experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Interact with pathologists, clinicians, laboratory staff, residents, and students to provide assistance and support during laboratory testing and training sessions; liaise with accrediting organizations and regulatory agencies as needed
  • Perform Quality Control (QC) and complex patient testing; develop skills and maintain competency in routine, specialty, and assigned laboratory areas
  • Perform patient and QC material tests and report results in accordance with departmental policy
  • Ensure error rates are consistent with established departmental standards
  • Report and document critical and corrected values per medical laboratory policy
  • Incorporate clinical correlation of results with other known patient data during result verification per department procedure, including delta checks
  • Prioritize and manage workload to meet or exceed established Turn-Around-Times (TATs)
  • Maintain competencies and acquire new skills as technologies evolve
  • Assess proper inventories and correctly use supplies and reagents
  • Receive, store, and verify reagents for quality prior to use per departmental policy; utilize reagents and supplies according to manufacturer and/or procedural instructions; dispose of reagents and supplies in accordance with departmental safety guidelines
  • Perform advanced equipment troubleshooting and maintenance responsibilities
