About The Position

Under general supervision of the Senior Center Supervisor, designs, facilitates and oversees “Friendship Circle” Memory Care activities, catering to the cognitive, physical and social needs of individuals experiencing early memory loss or mild to moderate dementia.

  • Knowledge of Various types of dementia, their presenting concerns and indicated interventions
  • Memory loss progression
  • Ability to Push/ pull/ lift objects of up to 25 pounds, occasionally; sit or stand, frequently
  • Perform manipulative skills such as keyboarding or filing
  • See objects closely as in reading a report; hear normal sounds with background noise, distinguish voice patterns and communicate with speech as in using a telephone
  • Concentrate on moderate detail with some interruption, attend to task 60 minutes or more, remember multiple tasks/assignments over long periods; understand and relate to specific ideas, generally, several at a time
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years’ experience working with older adults with mild and moderate dementia in daycare, long-term care, or recreational setting, preferred

Nice To Haves

  • degree and/or certification in Gerontology, Therapeutic Recreation or related field preferred

Responsibilities

  • Designs and facilitates engaging activities that promote cognitive stimulation, physical activity and the social needs of individuals with memory impairments.
  • Trains and supervises volunteers who assist with program facilitation.
  • Keeps accurate and up-to-date records of participant attendance, progress, incidents and observations.
  • Evaluates each participant’s cognitive function using standardized tools, such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), upon initial interview and periodically thereafter to determine therapeutic indication of the program.
  • Communicates participant status with family members and/or caregivers, verbally or in writing.
  • In collaboration with Senior and Social Services staff, assesses participants’ needs and modifies program accordingly.
  • Produces and distributes promotional materials such as press releases, flyers, posters and social media outreach.
  • Maintains program inventory and supplies.
  • Assists with Riverfront Community Center front desk administrative and clerical duties as required.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Maintains confidentiality of records and information as appropriate
  • Observes safe work practices
  • Represents the Town in a professional and courteous manner at all times
  • Regularly attends and is punctual for work
