About The Position

The Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing assessments, determining appropriateness of service, and providing treatment services. A Mental Health Counselor must also complete paperwork related to these functions.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of alcoholism and chemical dependency.
  • Demonstrated knowledge/skill of clinical practice and performance, including a thorough knowledge of diagnostic assessment, including DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, treatment planning, and counseling interventions.
  • Ability in effective communication, interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make decisions and to demonstrate sound judgment.
  • Ability to effectively manage self and tasks for maximum efficiency.
  • Ability to complete all required documentation in accordance with agency policy.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, and public and private resources pertaining to counseling services.
  • Shall be currently licensed, or eligible for licensure, by the State of Ohio Counselor and Social Work Board.
  • Degree in Behavioral Science or related field.
  • Valid Ohio Motor Vehicle License required and ability to maintain insurability.
  • Maintain CPR/First Aid training.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior counseling experience in outpatient or inpatient setting preferred, including experience working with chemically dependent people/families, experience with the 12-Step Recovery Program.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts diagnostic assessments and determines client appropriateness for service.
  • Gathers information on individuals and identifies client’s strengths, weaknesses, needs and problems to formulate appropriate treatment plan.
  • Conducts intensive individual counseling sessions with clients on a one-to-one basis; ensures flow of client’s case during treatment pertaining to area of expertise.
  • Ensures individual treatment plan is appropriate to client’s needs and is being implemented properly.
  • Provides written documentation of client activity, develops treatment plans, and written updates to maintain compliance with requirement standards, and provides documentation for billing of services.
  • Initiates all correspondence and paperwork related to assessments and client service reports (i.e., letters, progress notes, etc.).
  • Provides input to treatment team regarding the developments of treatment plans and client progress.
  • Meets with clinical staff and Program Director for review, input, and consultation into client plan.
  • Provides case management services, such as community linkage and development of resources for clients.
  • Collaborates with, and functions as part of interdisciplinary team to ensure appropriate care for clients served.
  • Assists in the evaluation of program goals and objectives.
  • Conducts educational and group counseling services to improve coping skills and provides a forum in which to share and learn communication skills.
  • Performs any other duties assigned by the Program Director.
