About The Position

Studio in a School (Studio) is seeking Mentors who have a deep interest in the arts, exceptional organization skills, effective collaboration skills, and a desire to mentor teens in our summer internship program. Mentors support and provide oversight to rising senior high school students participating in the Bloomberg Arts Internship program. Throughout the summer, students will be interning at arts and cultural organizations within New York City, participating in college support and professional development workshops, and attending arts and cultural field trips across the boroughs. Mentor roles include conducting check-ins at interns’ worksites, coordinating arts engagement visits, contributing to workshops, reviewing interns’ assignments, and documenting program activities. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in arts and educational program management and guidance for teens as they prepare to transition to college. This is a seasonal, part-time, non-exempt, non-union position that reports to the Associate Manager, Arts Internship, Teen Programs and receives guidance and supervision from the Program Manager, Arts Internship, Teen Programs. This position also supports supervising and mentoring a cohort of interns in NYC. There will be eight postgraduate and eight undergraduate mentor positions available for the summer 2026 program. Students currently in graduate school are welcome to apply to the postgraduate mentor positions. Each undergrad mentor will be partnered with a postgrad mentor.  As a team, they will support a cohort of approximately 16 high school interns. Throughout the intern orientation and the 7-week program, mentors will be role models for high school interns by modeling interpersonal communication skills and setting workplace expectations. About Studio in a School Studio in a School fosters the creative and intellectual development of young people through quality visual arts programs directed by professional artists, arts and cultural internships, and apprentice-based learning in the arts. The organization also collaborates with and develops the ability of those who provide or support arts programming and creative development for young people both in and outside of schools.

Requirements

Postgraduate candidates must be current seniors or have graduated in 2024 or 2025, or a currently enrolled graduate student, and must reside in New York City for the entire duration of the program, including orientation dates.
Undergraduate candidates must be current sophomores or juniors in college and must reside in New York City for the entire duration of the program, including orientation dates.
Undergraduate applicants must provide transcripts showing full time enrollment during the 2025-2026 academic year.
Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to effectively coordinate program activities and engage diverse stakeholders.
Proficiency in relevant applications and platforms including Zoom, Slack, and Google Suite.
Knowledge of arts and cultural organizations in NYC, with a passion for nurturing the next generation of arts professionals.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, adapting to evolving priorities and needs.
Commitment to the mission of Studio in a School.
Self-motivation, assertiveness, positive demeanor, and willingness to work in a collaborative team environment.
Strong work ethic; highly organized and able to meet deadlines.
Excellent writing and editing skills and a high comfort level communicating with various stakeholders.

Mentors must be fully available to work May 18 th , June 4 th & 5 th , and from June 8th through August 21 st , 2026.
Mentors must be available to work in-person on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and remotely Tuesday or Thursday, up to 28 hours per week.
During the Mentor orientation/training period (June 8, 2026 to June 26, 2026), Mentors will work a set schedule up to 20 hours per week.
During the Intern orientation/training period (June 29, 2026 to July 2, 2026), Mentors will work a set schedule up to 20 hours per week.
During the Summer internship period (July 6, 2026 to August 21, 2026), Mentors will work a set schedule up to 28 hours per week.

Nice To Haves

Previous experience working with arts organizations or mentoring young professionals in an educational capacity, preferred.

Responsibilities

Mentor high school interns working at cultural institutions throughout New York City, and be active listeners to each intern’s respective journey.
Support interns through the college application process, offering guidance on college selection, navigating the Common App, and exploring financing a college education; share your own college journey, and help students understand their options.
Cultivate arts appreciation through chaperoning students during in-person field trips to museums, outdoor installations, and parks; encourage students to create genuine connections to art and culture through conversations and assigned projects.
Provide reminders and timely feedback to interns regarding work assignments, schedules, and responsibilities.
Collect and process weekly intern timesheets and track interns’ assignments.
As a team, coordinate visits to interns’ work sites to address progress and well-being; discuss highlights and challenges; report concerns to Associate Manager.
Liaise with partnering organizations and obtain supervisor feedback on intern experience throughout the summer.
Manage documentation of the program, setting up flow and folders in Google Drive, taking photos of weekly enrichment sessions, capturing quotes and filing materials.
Oversee and assist with interns’ PowerPoint presentations for the culminating event.
Assist writing instructors by proofreading interns’ essays.
