About The Position

St. Luke’s School, a secular (non-religious), college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12, seeks a full time Band Teacher to direct our 6th, 7th, 8th, and high school bands as well as direct the pit orchestra for our Upper School musical annually. A successful candidate will join a dynamic and highly experienced Performing Arts Department composed of a choir teacher, a digital music teacher, and two theater teachers. This team combines technical expertise, creative vision, and a passion for working with young people and cultivating the arts in their lives. The Band program concludes each semester with a well-attended evening concert, a signature event in the life of the school. The Performing Arts Department is grounded in the St. Luke’s Educator Competencies which form the foundation of all teachers’ professional work at the school, and the school’s Strategic Plan provides overall direction. Requirements

• Minimum of 3 years’ teaching experience
• Experience working with true beginners as well as advanced musicians
• Ability to differentiate for learners of varying skill levels within a band
• Strong knowledge of music curriculum and pedagogy
• An inspiring, dynamic classroom teaching practice
• Familiarity with a program like Sibelius or Finale (to write additional parts for other instruments as needed)
• Commitment to collaboration with colleagues
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong cultural competency skills, with demonstrated commitment to furthering an equitable and inclusive school community
• Eagerness to develop student agency through meaningful learning experiences
• Dedication to cultivating a sense of belonging in students by building trusting relationships
• Experience providing clear and actionable feedback to students, grounded in a growth mindset
• Desire to continue growing professionally
• Candidates who advance in the interview process should be able to provide lesson plans and a portfolio of assignments that reflect current research-supported educational practices.

Responsibilities

• Teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Band: Band 6 meets 2x cycle (approx. 30 students) Band 7 meets 2x cycle (approx. 30 students) Band 8 meets 4x cycle (approx. 30 students)
• Teach Upper School Band: Upper School Band meets 4x cycle (approx. 40 students)
• Meet with students for individual instruction
• Co-lead the SLS Blues Band (fall season, M-Th after school)
• Direct the pit orchestra for the Upper School musical (winter season, M-F after school, plus some weekends and tech rehearsals)
• Participate in a spring after school activity, to be determined
• Serve as co-advisor for a group of 8-12 students.
• Assist with supervisory and other duties as assigned, such as recess or lunch duty.
