About The Position

Teach migrant preschool students in pre-literacy skills, fine motor skill development, and social skills using culturally appropriate strategies; design and adopt appropriate curriculum materials/ assess student progress; supervise educational assistant; maintain classroom discipline; present program for parent night; communicate with parents as needed. Assist students in the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, physical, emotional, and psychological growth and maturation.

Requirements

Knowledge of : Appropriate instructional techniques for language minority students
Understanding of the experiences, working, and living conditions, language, and social and cultural issues affecting migrant students and families
specific curriculum content and best instructional practices for working with preschool children.
Skilled in : lesson plan development
implementation of learning activities
behavior management
assessment
teaching to individual student levels
basic computer literacy.
Ability to : Ability to design curriculum and assessment tools for use with migrant students
Fluent English
Demonstrated abilities in classroom organization and behavior management
Native fluency in Spanish (speaking, reading and writing)
communicate orally and in writing in both Spanish and English
represent the program to the migrant students and parents
maintain accurate records
advocate for the student in the home and school settings
and build relationships with students, parents, and staff
work with a diverse population of students and parents.
Flexible and willing to do a variety of jobs to meet deadlines and complete all required training.
Requires native fluency in Spanish and excellent communication skills with speakers of both English and Spanish.
Two years of college, associate’s degree or passing score on a para-professional exam in reading, writing and math as required by federal law .
Certification Required: Medic First Aid Card
Valid Oregon Driver's License and automobile insurance in order to provide own transportation.
Ability to read English and comprehend complex technical language.
Ability to write memoranda, correspondence, lesson plans, reports, and student achievement summaries in both English and Spanish.
Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with a high degree of accuracy.
Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed, but basic, written or oral instructions in both English and Spanish.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor(s), staff, students, parents and community.

Nice To Haves

Experience in a preschool setting, native fluency in Spanish and excellent communication skills with speakers of both English and Spanish preferred.
Two years successful experience teaching migrant students preferred.

Responsibilities

Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and times as designated.
Identify and recruit migrant families for program participation.
Assist with the enrollment of students and the collection of data.
Collect and maintain all necessary student and program data as required by the Migrant Education Services Center (MESC).
Plan a program of study that meets the interests, needs and abilities of the students and follows established curriculum as written by the district and the state.
Design or adapt curriculum and assessment materials as needed for use with migrant students.
Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is appropriate to the maturity level and interests of the students.
Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of the supervisor.
Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent within the limitations of the location and resources provided y the district.
Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral process of the students.
Understand the social and cultural elements affecting migrant students and their families.
Translate (Spanish/English) preschool information for parents in both oral and written form as necessary.
Cooperate with other staff members.
Attend staff meetings and other meetings as required.
Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules of the school district.
Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and maintain such records as required by law and district policy; make recommendations for student placement.
Take all reasonable precautions to provide for the health and safety of the students and to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
Train and work with instructional assistants and volunteers.
Work with other personnel from the school district and the community to provide each student with the range of services needed.
Cultivate and model a respectful working and learning environment.
Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds related to the job
Ability to work harmoniously with others.
Perform other duties as assigned.
