About The Position

As Millwright Crew Chief, you will provide leadership and supervision while directing the work activities of the Marine Maintenance Millwright group, which provides services to the various business groups within the Seaport and Real Estate Divisions. You will be responsible for the supervision and organization of the Marine Maintenance Millwright and Pile Driver team, who complete a wide variety of tasks, generally related to welding, metal fabrication and harbor maintenance. You must have technical knowledge and expertise in metal fabrication, repair, and replacement techniques and possess strong mechanical aptitude. You will receive notifications of new work orders/requests (via telephone, email, or job tracking system) and develop plans for completing requested projects, plan for material, equipment, PPE, and staffing needs. You will prepare and review site specific safety plans for each project or work task and develop job documentation and supporting materials as needed. You will provide information and respond to inquiries from Port staff and the general public regarding assigned projects. You will ensure and enforce compliance with all Port of Seattle rules, policies, construction safety regulations, and Marine Maintenance work requirements. You will prepare and maintain project documentation and controls, including inspection logs, daily reports, materials testing, and other construction records for complex and difficult construction projects. You will serve as the designated Marine Maintenance Millwright Crew Chief, ensuring all workers and contractors meet compliance and training requirements. You will assist in investigating and reporting on injuries, incidents, and close calls, including corrective action. You will assess environmental risks, monitor construction sites, and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal hazmat regulations. You will be required to perform the duties of a journey-level Millwright.

Requirements

  • Certified welder by The Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO) in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) on all positions E7018 (1’’ unlimited stick cert)
  • Five (5) years of journey-level millwright welding experience
  • Two (2) years of supervisory or leadership role that encompass the experience and skills of the crew duties, or others, as assigned
  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Able to provide sound judgment and help create and lead successful solutions, while managing through conflict, change and a variety of leadership styles and priorities
  • Able to work as part of a team and partner with staff to achieve results
  • Capable of working independently with little guidance to complete tasks
  • Able to perform all journey-level Millwright work activities
  • Work effectively from technical drawings
  • Familiar with all work-related safety codes, regulations, and requirements
  • Ability to work at heights, over water, and in confined spaces
  • Can properly use rigging, personal safety equipment, and industry required tools
  • Knowledge of construction means, methods and practices of respective trade
  • Strong customer service and time management skills

Nice To Haves

  • Journey-level millwright experience in the maintenance and/or construction field
  • Layout and small job estimating experience
  • Knowledge of repair procedures
  • Certified with The Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO) Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) on all positions E71T-8, 1/8’’ and over (inner shied wire cert)
