About The Position

The Mobile Equipment Metal Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and fabricating metal components on vehicles and heavy equipment to ensure structural integrity and operational readiness. This role includes performing welding, cutting, and metal fabrication, interpreting technical drawings and blueprints, and restoring damaged frames, panels, and structural assemblies. The mechanic ensures all work meets quality, safety, and corrosion prevention standards while maintaining compliance with industry and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in metal fabrication, structural repair, and welding operations.
  • Current welding certification in accordance with AWS D1.1 standards (or equivalent) for applicable welding processes.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications to independently plan and execute work assignments.
  • Experience conducting inspections and assessing structural damage to determine appropriate repair solutions.
  • Working knowledge of metalworking tools, fabrication equipment, and thermal cutting processes.
  • Strong commitment to quality control, with the ability to inspect and verify completed work to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to federal, state, and local safety regulations, including OSHA standards.
  • Ability to work independently and manage assigned responsibilities with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all assigned duties in compliance with applicable technical specifications, performance standards, and industry regulations.
  • Conduct detailed visual and technical inspections of equipment frames, hulls, bodies, and structural components to identify cracks, corrosion, deformation, stress fractures, and other defects.
  • Evaluate damage and determine appropriate corrective action, including repair, fabrication, or full component replacement.
  • Document inspection findings and provide recommended repair plans for each assessed asset.
  • Fabricate and form metal parts, brackets, plates, and structural components using blueprints, engineering drawings, or reverse-engineering methods.
  • Operate metalworking equipment such as shears, press brakes, rollers, grinders, and saws to cut, bend, and shape materials to precise specifications.
  • Design and produce custom modifications, including mounting brackets, reinforcement plates, and other structural enhancements to meet operational requirements.
  • Perform welding on steel, aluminum, and various alloys using SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW processes.
  • Ensure all welds meet required structural integrity and quality standards.
  • Utilize thermal cutting equipment, including plasma cutters and oxy-acetylene torches, to remove damaged material and prepare surfaces for repair.
  • Repair or replace damaged panels, frames, and structural assemblies to restore equipment to original strength and functionality.
  • Prepare surfaces for finishing by grinding, sanding, and cleaning repaired areas.
  • Apply primers and protective coatings to prevent corrosion and extend service life.
  • Inspect completed work to verify it meets established quality standards and is free from defects.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and compliant work environment in accordance with OSHA and other applicable safety regulations.
