Summary The Mohs Technician (Histotechnician) plays a critical role in supporting Mohs micrographic surgery by preparing, processing, and staining tissue specimens for immediate microscopic evaluation. This position works closely with the Mohs Surgeon to ensure accurate tissue mapping, high-quality slide preparation, and timely turnaround of specimens. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, organized, and capable of working efficiently in a fast-paced surgical and laboratory environment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Tissue Processing & Histology Receive, verify, and properly label surgical specimens Embed, freeze, and section tissue using a cryostat Cut high-quality frozen sections suitable for microscopic evaluation Perform routine and special stains (e.g., H&E staining) Mount, label, and prepare slides for immediate review by the Mohs Surgeon Maintain accurate tissue orientation and mapping to ensure complete margin evaluation Laboratory Operations Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment (cryostat, staining systems, microscopes) Monitor and maintain proper laboratory conditions, including temperature control and reagent quality Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents Ensure cleanliness, organization, and efficiency of the Mohs laboratory Quality Control & Compliance Follow established laboratory protocols and quality assurance procedures Ensure accuracy, consistency, and integrity of all tissue processing and slide preparation Maintain compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) standards and applicable state regulations Adhere to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and OSHA requirements Participate in lab audits, inspections, and documentation processes Surgical Support Assist the Mohs Surgeon and clinical team as needed during procedures Coordinate workflow to ensure efficient case turnaround times Communicate effectively with clinical staff regarding specimen status and workflow updates Documentation & Recordkeeping Maintain accurate records of specimens, slides, and lab activities Document quality control measures and equipment maintenance logs Ensure proper labeling and traceability of all specimens COMMON GENERAL DUTIES Maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times Follow all company policies, procedures, and safety standards Report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns promptly Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and a positive attitude Complete all tasks within established timelines Maintain regular attendance and punctuality Perform additional duties as assigned
