About The Position

The primary purpose of the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School is to educate children and to teach and nurture the skills necessary for success based on a foundation of Montessori philosophy and principles. BHMS also upholds the highest standards of independent school education as articulated in the Criteria for Accreditation of the New York Association of Independent Schools, Principles of Good Practice of the National Association of Independent Schools, and the American Montessori Society’s Philosophy and Practice and Code of Ethics. As an extension program of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School, A Montessori Summer seeks to offer consistency of practice, dignity in learning, and an enjoyable, laid-back, and happy summer experience for a range of children in the neighborhood. Role: Lead Teacher in Early Childhood (ages 3-6) Montessori Summer Program Brief Description: Lead Teacher for Summer Camp applies Montessori principles and philosophy to planning fun, age-appropriate classroom activities and projects aligned with summer session themes for mixed-age groups of 15-20 children, supported by classroom assistant and additional support staff. Candidates must have commenced Montessori training; ideal candidates will have experience working in Montessori settings and with students of a wide range of needs and backgrounds.

Requirements

  • Montessori training required - training in-progress or certification pending is acceptable
  • High school diploma required

Nice To Haves

  • Montessori classroom, afterschool, or camp experience preferred
  • BA or higher preferred

Responsibilities

  • Working with classroom team and summer camp team to create safe, fun, and memorable experiences for a wide range of neighborhood children
  • Preparing materials and lessons that meet the needs and interests of campers, aligned with Montessori philosophy and summer camp session themes.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching of Montessori shelf activities and thematic projects and experiences
  • Maintain a focus on routines, social-emotional well-being, grace and courtesy, and the basics of choosing, using, and cleaning up materials in a Montessori classroom.
  • Communicate clearly and accurately with campers and camp teammates, conveying clear expectations and managing student behavior in a positive, respectful, and effective manner.
  • Support parent connection via photos and highlights to be shared at the end of each week
  • Perform various reasonable tasks as requested by Camp Director and/or Assistant Director(s), Health Director(s) to help ensure a successful and joyful camp season
