About The Position

Thank you for your interest in our NSP Volunteer program at Sunday River Ski Patrol! Our Mountain Host program is full for the current season, but we still want to hear from you! If you are interested in volunteering with us next winter, please submit your application. We are currently conducting ski tests and interviews for the 2026/27 season. A Mountain Host works as part of a team to manage on-hill risk, support Ski Patrol in mountain rescues and medical emergencies, and provide a safe and welcoming environment to the public. The ideal candidate exercises sound judgment while executing the functions of the position. The Mountain Host reports to a Mountain Host Coordinator, Patrol Supervisor, or the Patrol Director. Daily work is performed under the general supervision of a Ski Patrol Area Foreman. Direct supervision is rare; most daily tasks must be completed independently.

Requirements

At least 18 years of age
High School Diploma or GED
Must Complete First Aid and CPR/AED certification during the first year of the program and maintain First Aid and CPR/AED certification while working
Advanced-level ski or snowboard ability; able to ski all groomed Black Diamond trails

Nice To Haves

Expert-level ski or snowboard ability
Experience working in the customer service or hospitality industry
Basic familiarity with Sunday River trails and lifts
Experience in emergency settings, preferably in healthcare

Responsibilities

Maintain ski/snowboard ability and exercises caution while skiing or riding on duty:
Set a positive and confidence-inspiring skiing/riding example for the public
Safely ski or ride groomed Black Diamond terrain
Safely and confidently complete work-related tasks in ski or snowboard boots, both on and off skis or snowboard
Understand and reliably perform on hill risk mitigation procedures:
Inspect lifts on every ride and report hazards or evidence of wear to the Area Foreman or Lift Maintenance personnel
Perform trail check procedures on every run according to best practices
Understand, implement, and maintain hazard marking practices and devices
Effectively and immediately communicate trail conditions and hazards to the Area Foreman
Confidently and reliably tie all knots related to the risk management program
Use tools including power drills, shovels, saws, and various hand tools to address hazards or for sign, marking, and fence construction, placement, and maintenance
Attentively and carefully perform trail closing procedures
Communicate professionally and effectively with guests, coworkers, vendors, and community members:
Educate guests and staff in accident prevention, rules and regulations, and proper use of equipment
Work to find answers to all guests’ questions
Request assistance with difficult guest interactions
Work as an effective and professional part of a team; contribute positive and respectful energy to the group dynamic
Provide and assist with Patrol incident response:
Recognize the need for a Patrol response when assisting guests; request help accordingly
Provide scene safety and assistance to responding Patrol personnel
Appropriately and immediately communicate findings and resource needs
Provide emotional or physical support for family and friends of guests receiving our assistance
Understand the traumatic stress felt by first responders, be willing to have open conversations following significant incidents, watch for signs of traumatic stress among coworkers, and take action to help
Proactively participate in Continuous Quality Improvement efforts:
Openly and honestly debrief significant incidents in a group setting, sharing areas of success and ideas for possible improvement
Invite and receive feedback professionally
Report safety and quality concerns immediately and discreetly
Thoroughly complete all required documentation in a timely and legible manner
Perform lift evacuation procedures under the direction of a Lift Evacuation Coordinator or Ground Team Leader
Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of the mountain and Mountain Operations departments:
Know the trail map and current trail status
Know the location of all Patrol resources
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with members of other Mountain Operations departments and develop an understanding of their processes
Be familiar with major buildings and overall property layout
Strive to develop an understanding of the internal layout of all buildings
Use phones and radios to transmit and receive operational or emergency information
Assist with missing persons procedures
Follow policies and procedures set within the Patrol SOPPs, the Patrol Handbook, and the Sunday River Volunteer Guide
Safely and confidently manage rescue toboggans and support mountain rescue procedures:
Manage unloaded toboggans on Green Circle and Blue Square groomed terrain
Load and unload approved lifts with toboggans using minimal help
Move toboggans into and out of sled sheds using minimal help
Inspect and maintain equipment and access to equipment:
Use shovels to maintain sled shed accessibility
Inspect medical supply bags and restock or updates as needed
Complete detailed AED inspections according to schedule
