About The Position

Natural Resource Biologist IV Supervisor - Fish Production Manager INTERNAL RECRUITMENT: OPEN TO CURRENT DNR FABS CANDIDATES ONLY GRADE 17 Main Purpose of Job This position acts as the Facility Manager and directs all aspects of fish culture activities at the Bear Creek State Fish Hatchery, Bear Creek Isolation Fish Hatchery and Mettiki Cooperative Fish Hatchery. Together, these facilities make up a coldwater production complex in the state supplying adult and juvenile trout to support the fisheries put and grow, put and take, youth rodeo, coldwater conservation and regional management programs and goals. In addition to fish production, duties include supervision of staff, development of project budgets, management of capital projects and critical maintenance, oversight of state housing, management of physical plant, including an operational management connection with other coldwater and warmwater production facilities as well as regional Freshwater staff. This position works directly with the Coldwater Production Manager to establish annual production goals and projects to meet annual needs. This position directly supports the agency’s mission of natural resources enhancement by providing recreational fishing opportunities for Maryland’s citizens and visitors and supporting restoration of coldwater fish populations (DNR goals 1, 3, 5 and 6).

Requirements

  • Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology and five years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.
  • Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university and five years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credit hours for one year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Five years prior experience at a freshwater Coldwater (Trout) aquaculture facility and/or experience culturing freshwater coldwater species.
  • Position has experience culturing fish eggs, larvae, juvenile and adults in both tank and raceway culture.
  • Proficiency in using spreadsheets and database software, preferably Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.
  • Experience with driving a truck, handling/trailering and hauling live fish.
  • Position will need to acquire a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Responsibilities

  • Manage the coldwater fish production of several varieties of salmonid fish species for fish stock enhancement, statewide management needs, put-and-take trout stocking, special management area trout stocking and youth fishing rodeos.
  • Participates in education/outreach, cooperative fish culture projects, and restoration of coldwater fish species for Maryland waters.
  • Uses a variety of strategies to raise fish for stocking, including intensive culture, extensive culture, and integrated fish culture. Other strategies include egg incubation, fry rearing and daily fish culture rearing of trout as directed by the Coldwater Fish Production Program Manager.
  • Responsible for the completion of all daily fish culture activities, maintenance of the facility, fish loading and fish distribution, by truck, requiring a Commercial Driver’s License, other duties as assigned and includes scheduled weekly and assigned weekend duty.
  • Serves and has operational administrative and procurement responsibility for the Fishing and Boating Services at Bear Creek and Mettiki Fish Hatcheries.
