A Naturalist manages the maintenance and preservation of Municipal nature trails and wildlife reserves. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek that may involve evening and weekend work. Work is performed in Municipal nature trails, parks, and wildlife preserves where such conditions as the seasonal extremes of weather, poisonous plants and insects, and difficult terrain may be encountered. Work requires moderate physical exertion when hiking, moving large plants and logs, and trapping animals.

Requirements

  • Education: Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with courses in the biological or environmental sciences.
  • Experience: N/A.
  • Equivalency Notes: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate and three years of experience in wildlife or nature preservation work may be substituted for the education requirement.
  • Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
  • PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE OR LEARNER PERMITS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.
  • NOTE: YOU MUST UPLOAD A COPY OF YOUR VALID DRIVER’S LICENSE WITH APPLICATION AT TIME OF APPLYING.
  • Knowledge of the care of plants, trees and shrubs in a natural environment.
  • Knowledge of the local flora and fauna species, both common and rare or endangered.
  • Knowledge of local climate, weather patterns, geography, and geology.
  • Skill in identifying rare or endangered flora and fauna species.
  • Ability to speak effectively.
  • Ability to stimulate the interest of others in natural history and natural science.
  • Ability to teach and lead others in the performance of their work.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the maintenance and preservation of Municipal nature trails and wildlife reserves.
