About The Position

Summer 2026 (May 2026 – July 2026) Full-time Work Schedule, Monday- Friday, 40 hours per week Position: Safety & Risk Management and Workers’ Compensation Unit Intern Location: Hybrid-313 Chapanoke Road, Raleigh, NC. Internship Duration: 10-week internship (May 26, 2026, to July 31, 2026) About the Internship: Join a team of dedicated professionals in the Safety & Risk Management (SRM) and Workers’ Compensation Unit at NCDOT. This internship offers hands-on experience supporting occupational safety, employee well-being, and workers’ compensation processes, with an added focus on safety communication and resource development. Interns will gain insight into how safety and risk management initiatives are planned, implemented, and communicated across a large organization while working in a collaborative and supportive environment. Focus Areas: •Business operations within safety and risk management •Drug and alcohol programs supporting workplace compliance •Employee safety initiatives, training, and safety communications •Workers’ compensation processes and administrative support •Development of safety planning and inspection resources Ideal Candidate: We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented student pursuing studies in Occupational Safety & Health, Digital Design, Business, or a related field. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in workplace safety, organizational planning, and safety communications. Experience or coursework in safety, risk management, or digital design is preferred.

Requirements

  • Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) within the past year.
  • 24 credit hours completed.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
  • Has legal right to work in the U.S. and do not need sponsorship

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or coursework in safety, risk management, or digital design is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain SRM Safety Calendars and SRM Safety Planners to support safety awareness and scheduling
  • Assist in developing SRM Pre-Trip Inspection Books and other safety reference materials
  • Support safety and risk management projects aimed at improving protocols and workflows
  • Assist the Workers’ Compensation Unit with case management, documentation, and reporting
  • Conduct research and compile data to support safety initiatives and training efforts
  • Collaborate with team members to identify, assess, and mitigate workplace risks
  • Participate in regular feedback sessions and Q&A opportunities with the supervisor
